Medical devices such as catheters can include structure or provision that permit a physician or other health care professional to adjust the stiffness of at least a portion of the medical device. In some instances, the medical device may be adjusted prior to inserting the medical device into a patient. In some cases, the medical device may be adjusted while in use within the patient.

Adjustable stiffness catheter

A system for delivering therapeutic agent to a target location in a body in accordance with one embodiment is provided comprising a plurality of magnetic particles, each magnetic particle carrying a therapeutic agent, and a magnetic device for attracting the magnetic particles to a target location. The magnetic particles may be delivered by a catheter into a blood vessel upstream from the target location so that they travel toward the target location. A method for delivering therapeutic agent to a target location in a body in accordance with another embodiment comprises providing a plurality of magnetic particles, each magnetic particle carrying a therapeutic agent, placing a magnetic device in a position to attract the magnetic particles to a target location, and allowing the magnetic particles to infuse the target location by the attraction of the magnetic particles to the magnetic device. The therapeutic agent may comprises a therapeutic agent for preventing or treating reperfusion injury, and the step of providing the plurality of magnetic particles may comprise delivering the plurality of magnetic particles through a blood vessel.

Magnetic particles for delivering therapeutic agent to a target location

In one embodiment, the present disclosure provides a biodegradable, self-powered medical device for preventing or reducing reperfusion injury, comprising a galvanic cell, the galvanic cell comprising: a first biodegradable electrode member; and a second biodegradable electrode member comprising a biodegradable conductive polymer and an electrode-releasable therapeutic agent, wherein the galvanic cell generates an electric force sufficient to cause the electrode-releasable therapeutic agent to be released from the biodegradable conductive polymer and elute to a target location. The device may further include a reservoir material containing a burst-release therapeutic agent.

Implantable self-powered biodegradable medical device to treat or prevent reperfusion injury

Devices and methods for transferring forces down a catheter shaft while also maintaining an open fluid pathway are disclosed. In some of the designs, inner and outer members of the catheter interact, allowing improved transfer of forces down the catheter shaft. These designs also allow for maintenance of a fluid pathway along the length of the shaft, including at locations where the inner and outer members are interacting with one another. Structures are disclosed which extend at least a portion of the length of the shaft, allowing improved force transfer and resistance to kinking. Structures are also disclosed which specifically allow for inner and outer members to engage one another at at least one point along the shaft, improving the transfer of forces down the shaft.

Medical device shaft designs

A method of coating an implantable medical device may include providing an implantable medical device, applying a polymer base to the medical device, and directing a first solution including therapeutic agent and solvent through the nozzle onto a target zone of the polymer base coating to penetrate the polymer base coating. The solution may be directed at the target zone until a predetermined concentration of the therapeutic agent can be integrated within the polymer base coating.

Selective application of therapeutic agent to a medical device

A stent for delivering therapeutic agents to a body lumen includes a plurality of circumferential serpentine bands with each band comprising a plurality of struts. At least one strut has at least one first well region and at least one second well region. The at least one first well region has a first thickness, the at least one second well region has a second thickness, the first thickness being greater than the second thickness. Each well region defines a well having a depth. At least some of the wells contain a therapeutic agent.

Drug-eluting stent

This invention is directed to a coating for a medical device, such as an intravascular stent, in which the coating, which comprises a first coating region comprising an adhesion promoter and a therapeutic agent. The coating can also include a second coating region which is substantially free of the adhesion promoter or any adhesion promoter. The invention is also directed to a method for manufacturing such a coated medical device.

Medical device having a coating comprising an adhesion promoter

A medical device coated with carrier macromolecules, wherein the carrier macromolecules are conjugated with a therapeutic agent. The carrier macromolecules may be antibodies which bind the therapeutic agent at the antigen binding site or by covalent bonding. The carrier macromolecules may be tethered to the surface of or dispersed within a coating on the medical device. The carrier macromolecules may release the therapeutic agent upon exposure to a trigger, which may be exposure to an aqueous environment, or a change in the pH or the ionic strength of the environment. The carrier macromolecules may also be bispecific antibodies directed to both a therapeutic agent and a target antigen. In some cases, binding of the target antigen causes the therapeutic agent to be released from the bispecific antibody. Also provided are methods of controlling the release and targeting of therapeutic agents eluted from a medical device.
