This invention relates generally to the field of moiety or molecule analysis, isolation, detection and manipulation and library synthesis. In particular, the invention provides a microdevice, which microdevice comprises: a) a substrate; and b) a photorecognizable coding pattern on the substrate. Preferably, the microdevice does not comprise an anodized metal surface layer. Methods and kits for isolating, detecting and manipulating moieties, and synthesizing libraries using the microdevices are also provided. The invention further provides two-dimensional optical encoders and uses thereof.

Microdevice containing photorecognizable coding patterns and methods of using and producing the same

This invention relates generally to the field of moiety or molecule isolation, detection and manipulation and library synthesis. In particular, the invention provides a microdevice, which microdevice comprises: a) a magnetizable substance; and b) a photorecognizable coding pattern, wherein said microdevice has a preferential axis of magnetization. Systems and methods for isolating, detecting and manipulating moieties and synthesizing libraries using the microdevices are also provided.

Microdevices having a preferential axis of magnetization and uses thereof

This invention provides electromagnetic chips and electromagnetic biochips having arrays of individually addressable micro-electromagnetic units, as well as methods of utilizing these chips for directed manipulation of micro-particles and micro-structures such as biomolecules and chemical reagents. An electromagnetic biochip comprises an individually addressable micro-electromagnetic unit chip with ligand molecules immobilized on its surface. By controlling the electromagnetic field at each unit of the array and combining this control with magnetic modification of biomolecules, these chips can be used for directed manipulation, synthesis and release of biomolecules in order to increase sensitivity of biochemical or chemical analysis and reduce assay time. Other advantages with these chips include minimized damages to biological molecules and increased reproducibility of assay results.

Individually addressable micro-electromagnetic unit array chips

The present invention provides electromagnetic chips and electromagnetic biochips having arrays of individually addressable micro-electromagnetic units, as well as methods of utilizing these chips for directed manipulation of micro-particles and micro-structures such as biomolecules and chemical reagents.

Individually addressable micro-electromagnetic unit array chips in horizontal configurations

The present invention concerns a high throughput electrorotation chip having an array of electrorotation units and methods of use thereof. To make the high throughput electrorotation chip, a plurality of electrorotation units (EU) are fabricated on a substrate or support and each EU is capable of producing a rotating electric field upon the application of an appropriate electrical signal. Exemplary embodiments include a row-column configuration of EUs having four electrode elements realized through two conductive-layers. The electrode elements may be linear, concave, or convex. Thin plates having one or multiple holes are bound to high-throughput electrorotation chips to form assay chambers having one or multiple wells. Particles can be introduced to the wells and electrorotation measurements can be performed on the particles. The high throughput electrorotation chip and chamber may be used for cell-based screening for leading drug candidate molecules from a compound library, for high-throughput characterizing particle electric properties, and for high-throughput assaying molecular compositions of unknown solutions.

Apparatus and method for high throughput electrorotation analysis

A magnetic-field sensor has an array of split-drain transistors connected in parallel, each having a first, a second, and a third drain electrode, and a negative reference current generating transistor. A biasing circuit is utilized to bias the split-drain transistors in the saturated state, and to actuate the negative reference current generating transistor to generate a negative reference current. A first, a second, and a third current mirror are all controlled by a reference voltage. The second current mirror is coupled to the second drain electrode of each of the split-drain transistors to keep the reference voltage at a reference level. The first current mirror is coupled to the first drain electrode of each of the split-drain transistors to generate a first sensed current, and the third current mirror is coupled to the third drain electrode of each of the split-drain transistors to generate a second sensed current. A positive reference current generating transistor is controlled by the reference voltage to generate a positive reference current. The first and second sensed currents, and the negative and positive reference currents can be utilized to indicate the strength of the magnetic field.

A method for fabricating an electrostatic microswitch has the steps of depositing a silicon nitride layer over a silicon substrate with an opening therethrough to expose the planned sacrificial layer region; oxidation to form a silicon dioxide sacrificial layer; phosphorus ion implantation into the sacrificial layer; forming a phosphorus-doped polysilicon microbeam of the microswitch and its electrode contacts; lateral etching all of the silicon dioxide sacrificial layer in buffered hydrofluoric acid to form an air gap between the microbeam and the substrate; rinsing the structure in DI water, and then in methanol; and drying the structure by a warm nitrogen flow.
