In some aspects, the disclosure is directed to methods and systems for overlapping orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) channels for coexistence of devices and legacy devices, including DOCSIS 3.1 mid-split and high-split cable modems (CMs). Described are systems and methods for providing a CMTS with capability for managing overlapping OFDMA channels to support mid-split and high-split CMs, without modification to legacy CMs.

A transmitter for use in a cable modem termination system includes a data processing module that generates a plurality of OFDM symbols from a data packet. A probe symbol generator generates a probe symbol, as one of a plurality of probe symbol types. The probe symbol is selectively inserted within the plurality of OFDM symbols, at a pre-defined probe symbol interval.

Communication system with proactive network maintenance and methods for use therewith

A method in a cable modern (CM) to adjust its timing offset when waking up prior to the termination of its sleep cycle is provided. The method includes the step of receiving a service identifier (SID) for a multicast maintenance region, receiving a message from a cable modem termination system (CMTS) to enter a sleep cycle, waking up from the sleep cycle before the end of the sleep cycle in response to an event, and sending a message to the cable modem termination system (CMTS) to adjust the CM's timing offset during the multicast maintenance region.

Multicast initial maintenance regions for cable modems in low power mode

A new protocol uses a trigger message to identify one or more symbols transmitted between a first and a second communication device. The first device generates and transmits a trigger message to the second device. This process may be initiated based on the first device receiving a measurement initiation message from another device (e.g., such as the second device or another device within the system). Then, the first device transmits a signal that includes those one or more symbols to the second device. Before or during transmission, the first device generates a first capture of those one or more symbols. After receipt of the transmission from the first device, the second device performs a second capture of those one or more symbols identified within the trigger message. Then, any device having the first and second captures can determine a characterization of the communication pathway between the first and second devices.

A number of features for enhancing the performance of a communication system, in which data is transmitted between a base station and a plurality of subscriber stations located different distances from the base station, are presented. The power transmission level, slot timing, and equalization of the subscriber stations are set by a ranging process. Data is transmitted by the subscriber stations in fragmented form. Various measures are taken to make transmission from the subscriber stations robust. The uplink data transmission is controlled to permit multiple access from the subscriber stations.

Robust techniques for upstream communication between subscriber stations and a base station

A cable modem that supports stateless requesting and/or limited contention-based requesting is provided herein. In an example, a physical layer (PHY) configured to communicate over a plurality of upstream channels is provided. A bandwidth requester is provided to request bandwidth using contention-based requesting over a first subset of the upstream channels for contention-based flows and request bandwidth using stateless requesting over a second subset of the upstream channels for stateless flows.

Solutions for upstream channel bonding

A supervisory communications device, such as a headend device within a communications network, monitors and controls communications with a plurality of remote communications devices throughout a widely distributed network. The supervisory device allocates bandwidth on the upstream channels by sending MAP messages over its downstream channel. A highly integrated media access controller integrated circuit (MAC IC) operates within the headend to provide lower level processing on signals exchanged with the remote devices. A method for increasing upstream bandwidth per cable modem user in a cable communications system that includes a cable modem termination system (CMTS) and a plurality of cable modems is provided. The method permits a cable modem to transmit data to the CMTS on multiple upstream channels simultaneously using a technique called 'channel bonding.' Channel bonding allows smaller bandwidth upstream channels to be bonded together to create a larger bandwidth pipe.
