A three-dimensional object printer compensates for variations in ejected material drop volumes by adjusting firing signal parameters. The printer includes an optical sensor that generates height measurement data of columns of material in a test pattern. Differences between the height of columns of material in the test pattern formed by the ejectors in the printhead and the expected height of the columns are compared to a predetermined range to detect drop variations that are out of tolerance. The modification of the firing signal parameter adjust the operation of the ejectors to bring the volume of the drops ejected by the ejector within tolerance range to reduce the ink drop velocities of the ejected drops within a predetermined range.

System for compensating for drop volume variation between inkjets in a three-dimensional object printer

A method measures distances between two printed lines on a rotating image receiving member to identify fluid drop mass or fluid drop velocity changes in inkjet ejectors in an inkjet printing system. An initial distance between the two lines is measured at the start of the operational life of the system. During the operation of the printing system, the lines are reprinted and the distance between the two lines compared to the initial distance stored in association with the printheads that printed the lines. If the distance has changed by more than a predetermined amount, a printer parameter is adjusted.

System and method for measuring fluid drop mass with reference to test pattern image data

A method measures distances between two printed lines on a rotating image receiving member to identify fluid drop mass or fluid drop velocity changes in inkjet ejectors in an inkjet printing system. An initial distance between the two lines is measured at the start of the operational life of the system. During the line of the printing system, the lines are reprinted and the distance between the two lines compared to the initial distance. If the distance has changed by more than a predetermined amount, a firing signal for the printheads that printed the lines is adjusted.

A method compensates for changes in drop mass of drops ejected by ink jets in a printhead of an ink jet imaging device. The method includes identifying an average of differences between drop placement position for ink drops on an image receiving member and default ink drop positions. The average of the differences is used to adjust a parameter of one or more ink jet driving signals in response to the average of the differences being greater than a predetermined threshold.

Drop mass calibration method based on drop positional feedback

A method of mounting a substrate having an array of actuators to another substrate in a way that reduces mechanical linkage between the actuators has been developed. The method includes cutting a first plurality of channels and a second plurality of channels in a substrate on which a plurality of actuators have been formed, each actuator having two sides that are parallel to one another and longer than two other shorter parallel sides of each actuator. The first plurality of channels is cut between the longer sides of adjacent actuators and the second plurality of channels is cut between the shorter sides of adjacent actuators. The channels in the second plurality of channels have a width that is less than a width of the channels in the first plurality of channels.

Method for reducing mechanical cross-talk between array structures on a substrate mounted to another substrate by an adhesive

A method binds a substrate having an array of actuators to a diaphragm array in a way that reduces secondary banding in an ink jet printhead that ejects a different color ink from each row of ink jets in the printhead. The method includes cutting a plurality of horizontal channels in a substrate on which a plurality of actuators have been formed, the horizontal channels being cut between rows of actuators on the substrate, and cutting a plurality of vertical channels in the substrate on which the plurality of actuators have been formed, the vertical channels being cut between columns of actuators on the substrate, the vertical channels having a width that is less than a width of the horizontal channels.

A method evaluates image quality in an ink printing system and generates data values for altering the operation of the ink printing system. The method includes generating an ink image on an ink image receiving member that corresponds to a digital image stored in the ink printing system, generating a scanned image signal corresponding to the ink image, generating firing signal waveform adjustments and image data adjustments with reference to the scanned image signal corresponding to the ink image, and operating a printhead in an ink imaging system with reference to the firing signal waveform adjustments and the image data adjustments.

System and method for adjusting operation of printheads in an ink printing device

A method of compensating for changes in drop mass of drop emitted by at least one ink jet of an ink jet imaging device is provided. The method comprises identifying a drop placement position on an image receiving member of an ink jet imaging device for at least one ink jet of a print head. The identified drop placement position for the at least one ink jet is compared to a default drop placement position for the at least one ink jet to determine a difference in drop placement position. A drive signal for the at least one ink jet is then adjusted in accordance with the difference in drop placement position.
