Compounds of formula (II) are antibacterial agents wherein Q represents a radical of the formula: &#x2014;N(OH)CH(&#x2550;O) or the formula: &#x2014;C(&#x2550;O)NH(OH); Rrepresents hydrogen, C&#x2013;Calkyl or C&#x2013;Calkyl substituted by one or more halogen atoms, or, except when Q is a radical of the formula: &#x2014;N(OH)CH(&#x2550;O), a hydroxy, C&#x2013;Calkoxy, C&#x2013;Calkenyloxy, amino, C&#x2013;Calkylamino, or di-(C&#x2013;Calkyl)amino group; Rrepresents a substituted or unsubstituted C&#x2013;Calkyl, cycloalkyl(C&#x2013;Calkyl)- or aryl(C&#x2013;Calkyl)-group; and A represents a group of formula (IIA), or (IIB) wherein Rrepresents the side chain of a natural or non-natural alpha amino acid, and Rand Rwhen taken together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached form a saturated heterocyclic first ring of 5 to 7 atoms as specified in the description.

Compounds of formula (I) are antibacterial or antiprotozoal agents for treatment of infections in humans and non-human mammals, wherein: Z represents a radical of formula &#x2014;N(OH)CH(&#x2550;O) or formula C(&#x2550;O)NH(OH); Rrepresents hydrogen, methyl or trifluromethyl, or except when Z is a radical of formula &#x2014;N(OH)(&#x2550;O), a hydroxy, halo or amino group; Rrepresents a group R&#x2014;(X)-(ALK)&#x2014; wherein R, ALK, X, m and n are as defined in the specification; Rrepresents hydrogen, (C&#x2013;C) alkyl or phenyl(C&#x2013;C)alkyl-; and Rand Rare as defined in the specification.
