Translating property names and name space names between different naming schemes is disclosed. In one embodiment, a method receives a request including a header specifying a property and a name space. The header has a naming scheme in accordance with either a concatenated naming scheme, such as specified by WebDAV, or a separated naming scheme, such as specified by OLEDB. The method translates the header to the other naming scheme, and outputs the request.

Markup language content and content mapping is disclosed. On one embodiment, content is received according to a first predetermined format, such as MAPI. The content is mapped from this format to a second predetermined format which is consistent with a predetermined markup language, such as XML. The second format may also be consistent with a predetermined extension of the markup language, such as the WebDAV extensions to XML. Once mapped, the content is output in the second format.

Depth-related requests without root-level information or actions according to standard request-response protocols such as HTTP are disclosed. For example, in one embodiment, a method specifies a request, such as a PROPFIND command, for application against a collection, such as a hierarchy of folders. Within a DEPTH header of the request, the method includes a NOROOT token to indicate that root-level information of the collection is unwanted. The request is then output, according to a predetermined transport protocol such as HTTP. In one embodiment, the outputting of the command is also according to a predetermined markup language, such as XML.

Providing for the omission of root information from depth-related requests according to standard request/response protocols

A method is described in which a client computer generates an HTTP request and transmits the request to a server computer that has access to a listing such as an e-mail listing, a directory listing, or a table. The HTTP request includes an identification of a number of row ranges within the listing. The server computer responds by transmitting an HTTP response that includes the number of row ranges back to the client computer. Since the entire listing need not be downloaded, and since a separate HTTP request is not required for each row range, time is conserved. In another method, the request includes an identification of a reference row other than by the row's exact sequential position in the listing. The row range is identified with respect to the reference row. Since row numbers for each given row can often change in frequently edited listings, the present invention more accurately downloads the desired rows.

Method and system for downloading selected rows within a listing using HyperText Transport Protocol (HTTP)

Standard database queries within standard request-response protocols is disclosed. A database query according to a predetermined query language such as SQL is first wrapped according to a predetermined markup language such as XML. The query is then also wrapped according to a predetermined transport protocol such as HTTP. The resulting twice-wrapped database query can then be submitted from a client to a server over a TCP/IP-compliant network, such as the Internet, for example.
