A method and apparatus for positioning a control surface. An apparatus comprises an arm, first link, and second link. The arm has first and second ends, the first end of the arm rotatably coupled to a wing structure to define a first pivot point. The first link has first and second ends, the first end being rotatably coupled to the second end of the arm. The second link has first and second ends, the first end rotatably coupled to the first end of the arm. When the second end of the first link is rotatably coupled to a first control surface and the second end of the second link is rotatably coupled to a second control surface, movement of the first control surface away from the wing structure rotates the arm about the first pivot point such that the second control surface moves in coordination with the first control surface.

Method and apparatus for controlling a droop panel

An aircraft spoiler mechanism includes a spoiler fore-section, a spoiler aft-section, and a reverse-motion linkage arm. The spoiler fore-section includes a forward end, a hinge end, an actuator coupling, and a pivot coupling to couple to a wing structure of an aircraft to enable rotation of the spoiler fore-section relative to the wing structure. The spoiler aft-section includes a hinge portion coupled to the hinge end of the spoiler fore-section and a crank-arm. The reverse-motion linkage arm includes a first end, a second end, and a pivot point coupled to the forward end of the spoiler fore-section. The spoiler mechanism also includes a first linkage to couple the first end of the reverse-motion linkage arm to the wing structure and a second linkage coupled to the second end of the reverse-motion linkage arm and to the crank-arm on the spoiler aft-section.

Multi-section spoiler

An aircraft control structure includes first and second outer surfaced joined to a side wall. Stiffening webs extends between the first and second outer surfaces, each stiffening web at least partially surrounding an associated aperture formed in either the first or second outer surface and defining a stiffening recess. Skin plates are sized to extend over an associated stiffening recess and are shaped to conform to an associated aperture. Each skin plate is joined to an associated stiffening web by a friction stir welded seam.

Friction stir welded aircraft structure and method

A method of forming a monolithic aircraft structure having multiple aerodynamic surfaces includes forming a body component to have a body skin defining a body skin outer surface, and a body side wall integrally formed with the body skin and defining a body mating surface, the body skin outer surface providing a first aerodynamic surface. A cover component is formed to have a cover mating surface and a cover outer surface opposite the cover mating surface, the cover outer surface defining a second aerodynamic surface. The body component is positioned relative to the cover component so that the body mating surface engages the cover mating surface. At least portions of the cover mating surface are friction stir welded to the body mating surface to form friction stir welded joints between the body component and the cover component.

Friction stir welded monolithic aircraft structure and method

Systems and methods for hydraulic droop control of an aircraft wing. One embodiment is a hydraulic droop panel system for an aircraft wing. The hydraulic droop panel system includes a first hydraulic actuator attached to a flap of the aircraft wing, and a second hydraulic actuator attached to a droop panel of the aircraft wing and fluidly coupled with the first hydraulic actuator. The second hydraulic actuator is configured to move the droop panel to a droop position corresponding with movement of the flap and the first hydraulic actuator.

Hydraulic droop control for aircraft wing

A system for mechanical operation of an aircraft wing includes a torque tube rotatable at a first rate of rotation to cause a downward rotation of a control surface relative to the aircraft wing. A gearing assembly including an output shaft is coupled to the torque tube. The torque tube is configured to rotate the output shaft, via the gearing assembly, at a second rate of rotation less than the first rate of rotation. A rotational member is coupled to the output shaft, and the output shaft is configured to drive a rotation of the rotational member. A first end of a linear actuator is coupled to the rotational member at a forward attach point, which is eccentric to a rotational center of the rotational member. The rotational member is rotatable to cause a translation of the forward attach point relative to the aircraft wing.

Mechanical droop for spoiler operation

A load path status detection system comprising a primary fastener, a load sensor, a primary structural link, and a secondary structural link. The primary fastener extends through the primary structural link. The load sensor is associated with the primary structural link. The primary structural link carries a load when a primary load path, formed by the primary fastener and the primary structural link, is functioning. The secondary structural link is parallel to the primary structural link, wherein the secondary structural link does not carry a load when the primary load path is functioning.

Load path status detection system

A fastener status detection system is presented. The fastener status detection system comprises a primary fastener, a secondary fastener, and a sensor. The secondary fastener is configured to be a back-up to the primary fastener. The sensor is positioned to measure at least a portion of a load between the primary fastener and the secondary fastener.
