The present invention provides a coating additive copolymer comprising, as copolymerized units, by dry weight based on total dry weight of the copolymer, from 20% to 60%, at least one acetoacetoxy or acetoacetamide functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and from 40% to 80% at least one water soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer. It further provides a coating formulation comprising higher than 0.04% by dry weight based on total dry weight of the coating formulation, the acetoacetoxy or acetoacetamide functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer.

Coating additive

The present invention provides a paint formulation comprising a binder dispersion and a hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion. The wet weight ratio of the binder dispersion to the hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion is from 1:3 to 1:10. The binder dispersion comprises by dry weight based on total dry weight of the binder dispersion, from 0.1% to 80% of polymer particles, and from 0.1% to 5% of a polysaccharide; and the hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion comprises by dry weight based on total dry weight of the hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion, from 30% to 50% of an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and from 30% to 60% of an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer. The present invention further provides a process for preparing the paint formulation comprising mixing the binder dispersion with the hydrophobically modified alkali-swellable emulsion under stirring.

Paint formulation and the process of making thereof

The present invention provides a hydrophobic alkali soluble emulsion comprising a polymer obtainable by polymerization with the following monomer components: a) from 40 wt. % to 50 wt. %, based on the total weight of the polymer, of an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer; b) from 40 wt. % to 50 wt. %, based on the total weight of the polymer, of an &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;-ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer; c) from 5 wt. % to 8 wt. %, based on the total weight of the polymer, of a nonionic macromonomer; and d) from 1 wt. % to 3 wt. %, based on the total weight of the polymer, of a methyl polyglycol acrylic acid ester.
