A system and method for calibrating an IV pump infusion system tube comprises a fluid source, an infusion system comprising, an IV pump, a drive unit, a chamber with known constant volume, a control unit, and IV tubing with a known inner diameter tolerance, and a sensor and floating detection object. The system administers medicinal fluid, calculates the flow rate of the medicinal fluid in the chamber by measuring the time the floating detection object and medicinal fluid rises in the chamber, compares the calculated flow rate with a set flow rate of the IV pump input in the control unit prior to infusion, and adjusts the IV pump and flow rate based on the compared deviations for more accurate delivery to a patient. This configuration may provide a more precise delivery rate of medicinal fluid, preventing harm to the patient and waste of medicine.

An automatic injection device with flow regulation is disclosed. The automatic injection device has an insertion needle configured to be inserted into a patient and a drug container which contains a pharmaceutical product and includes a plunger. The automatic injection device also has a fluid path which fluidly connects the drug container to the patient via the insertion needle, a potential energy source, and a regulator configured to restrict release of potential energy and restrict linear movement of the plunger and the pharmaceutical product into the fluid path at a proscribed pace. The regulator includes a clock escapement mechanism. The potential energy source may be a spring that surrounds the drug container and may be magnetically coupled to the plunger. The clock escapement mechanism is configured to control the spring at a regulated rate over a time interval using a gearbox and a rotational-to-linear translator comprising a rack and a pinion.

The automatic injection device also has a fluid path which fluidly connects the drug container to the patient via an insertion needle, a potential energy source, and a regulator configured to restrict release of potential energy and restrict linear movement of the plunger and the pharmaceutical product into the fluid path at a proscribed pace. The regulator includes a clock escapement mechanism and a wire and pulley system including a wire coupled to at least one pulley. The potential energy source may be a spring that surrounds the drug container and may be directly coupled to the plunger and the wire such that movement of the spring and the wire is restricted over time.

A device and method are disclosed for an elastic strip with a first fixed end and a second movable end, the elastic strip configured to be in at least one of a tense state and an elastic state. A release mechanism is configured to maintain the elastic strip in a tense state when the release mechanism is in a holding state, and configured to release the elastic strip when in a release state. A needle path with a first bend is provided. A rigid needle is configured to traverse a first portion of the needle path when the elastic strip is in the elastic state and a cannula is located in the needle path and configured to traverse a second portion of the needle path when the rigid needle traverses the first portion of the needle path.

The passive drive system has a movable element. The movable element has a shape memory alloy and is configured to change shape to move the plunger.

A device and a method for insertion of a cannula into a user's tissue are disclosed. A patch pump comprising a non-linear needle path with a first bend may be provided. A rigid needle may be located in the non-linear needle path and may be composed of a material that allows the rigid needle to maintain a bend at the first bend when traversing the non-linear needle path. A movement mechanism may be configured to apply a first force on a first end of the rigid needle to cause the rigid needle to traverse the non-linear needle path from a first needle position to a second needle position. The cannula may receive a second force from a second end of the rigid needle when the movement mechanism applies the first force on the first end of the rigid needle and may be configured to traverse from a first cannula position to a second cannula position based on the second force.

A device and method for measuring an IV pump infusion system flow comprises a fluid source configured to store medicinal fluid and a weight sensing mechanism comprising a weight sensor and microprocessor. The weight sensing mechanism is configured to detect the weight of the fluid source as the medicinal fluid leaves the fluid source. The device in the infusion system administers medicinal fluid using a set flow rate for the IV pump input into the control unit prior to infusion, measures the change in mass of the fluid source containing medicinal fluid as fluid exits the source, calculates the flow rate based on the change in mass over time, compares the calculations with a set flow rate, and adjusts the IV pump and flow rate based on the compared deviations, for improved delivery accuracy. This configuration may also prevent patient harm and medicine waste.

A device and method for creating a fluid path are disclosed. A patch pump may include a start button. A force may be applied on a button needle in a force direction, based on activating the start button. A first end of the button needle may puncture a fluid container by moving the button needle from a first button needle position to a second button needle position via the force in the force direction. A second end of the button needle may be positioned underneath a carrier septum contained in a carrier, via the applied force. The carrier may be released based on activating the start button and the second end of the button needle, based on releasing the carrier, may puncture the carrier septum. A fluid path may be provided form the fluid container to a patient's tissue based on puncturing the fluid container and the carrier septum.

A lancing device (e.g., pen) having an integrated thermoelectric (e.g., Peltier) cooler. The lancing device includes an elongated heat accumulator having a lumen along which a piston having a lancet thereon translates back and forth. A Peltier device and a cooling ring are thermally interconnected to one end of the heat accumulator and include central apertures through which the lancet can extend. The lancing device also includes an integrated battery and microcontroller for supplying and regulating power to the Peltier device. Upon a current being sent through the Peltier device, a cold side of the Peltier device and hence the cooling ring gives up thermal energy and reduces in temperature. The cooling ring can then be placed about a body tissue (e.g., skin) for a period of time (e.g., 3-5 seconds) to desensitize the body tissue, and then the lancet can be fired to puncture the body tissue.
