A transfer device is provided for moving an object from a first location to a second location, in particular a gurney for transporting a hospital patient. The device includes a litter mechanism for carrying the object to be transported thereon and a support structure for supporting the litter mechanism and for transporting the litter mechanism between the first location and the second location. In one embodiment, the litter mechanism is pivotable with respect to the support structure to aid in transferring the object/patient thereto and therefrom. In a second embodiment, the litter mechanism is also moveable laterally and transversely with respect to the support structure. Underneath the support structure are outriggers which are extendable outwardly from the device to stabilize the device and prevent it from tipping over when the litter mechanism is extended transversely with respect to the support structure.

Crashworthiness is built into the head end car to provide safety for the engineer and crew in case of accident.

A rack includes means for suspending dirty paint brushes in disposable cups containing cleaning fluid. The number and location of brushes and cups may be varied so that different sizes of brush, containing different color paint and paint bases can be cleaned simultaneously in different solvents.

A stub post is connected between the roof and ceiling of a railway car. A stanchion is fixed to the stub post and slip fitted into a cup secured to the top of an aisle seat. An adapter unit attached to the stub post is provided to receive the top end of the stanchion and permit it to be pivoted in position to drop into the cup member before it is fixed in place to the adapter.

An emergency release handle is pivotally mounted within an interior wall of a railcar and connected to pull a cable under emergency conditions to actuate a mechanism, such as a mechanism to open a door. The handle is normally maintained inside the wall by a flexible guard plate and retaining screws passing through screw holes which are connected to the wall surface. Manual gripping means is connected to the handle to permit a person to grip it and pull to cause the flexible guard to flex and pass the retaining elements and permit the handle to pivot and pull the cable.

Methods and means for manufacturing, packaging and assembling a modular railway car includes fabricating the floor, sidewalls, roof and end frame components for a railway car, each component having areas capable of receiving weld joints or bolt openings to provide interconnecting means. After manufacture, all the components are packed for shipment in an open bottom container with the floor secured to the sides of the container providing the support for the other components with the roof on top. At the point of destination, the container is placed on a jig or fixture on which the components are assembled. After removal of the container, the top roof is removed to permit the sidewalls and end frames to be raised and assembled in place. The roof is then connected. All the components may be interconnected by bolting or welding.
