Methods for performing a camera calibration process for outward-facing cameras on devices such as head-mounted display devices are disclosed. Using a second device, a calibration process for the outward-facing cameras on a first device may be performed. Communications of information for a calibration scheme comprising a ground truth comprising features and respective distance separating the features currently displayed or to be displayed may be performed between the first and second device. Calibration parameters may be determined by comparing identified features in captured images of the calibration scheme displayed on the second device to the ground truth.

Infield camera calibration using display device

A scene depicted using a binocular display device may be mis-calibrated in the vertical axis and generate vertical alignment error. A free-fusion state inducing scene may be first displayed that presents a user of the device with a contrasting scene that allows the user to recognize effects of vertical alignment error. Once accustomed to the free-fusion inducing scene, a vertical alignment error measurement scene may be displayed to the user to determine the vertical alignment error generated due to the miscalibration of the device. Based on the observed vertical alignment error, user input may be obtained to align the two patterns. A correction factor may be determined based on the user input and the device may be calibrated based on the correction factor.

Perceptual measure of end-to-end splay

A display may use a waveguide to provide image light to an eye box. An emitter may emit infrared light collimated at different angles relative to a collimated axis and divergent along an orthogonal axis. The waveguide may propagate the infrared light and may include overlapping one-dimensional diffractive gratings with parallel periodic structures. Each grating may diffract, towards the eye box, a respective portion of the infrared light from a respective incident angle onto a respective output angle relative to the collimated axis. A camera may capture glints of the infrared light as reflected off a user's eye at the eye box for performing gaze tracking. The emitter and the gratings may effectively form a one-dimensional line of infrared emitters overlapping the eye box while allowing the optical emitter to remain invisible to a user.
