A friction-reducing lubricating oil composition and a method for reducing the fuel consumption of an internal combustion engine are disclosed. The lubricating oil composition comprises (a) a major amount of an oil having lubrication viscosity; (b) a minor amount of a friction-modifying, polar and surface-active compound; (c) a minor amount of a Group IA alkoli metal containing compound and (d) a minor amount of a transition element metal in a hydrocarbon-soluble or dispersible compound. The method for reducing fuel consumption of a spark-ignited internal combustion engine comprises utilizing an embodiment of the lubricating oil composition in the crankcase of the engine.

A lubricating oil composition which includes partial esters of glycerol substantially free from glycerol are disclosed. The partial esters of glycerol are present in an amount of about 0.05 to about one percent by weight, and include less than about 1 weight percent of unreacted glycerol based on the total weight of glycerol esters and free glycerol present. Enhanced reduction in friction and improved stability are obtained.

Friction reducing lubricating oil composition

A lubricating composition, preferably essentially free of zinc dihydrocarbyldithiophosphate compounds, and optionally free of chlorine containing silver lubricity agents, comprising a major proportion of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of a silver protective agent comprising the reaction product of a C.sub.5 to C.sub.60 carboxylic acid and at least one amine selected from the group consisting of (1) guanidine, urea, and thioruea compounds; (2) C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 hydrocarbyl or hydroxy-substituted hydrocarbyl mono-amines, alkylene diamines, and (3) polyalkylene polyamines; and N-alkyl glycine.
