Preassembled connecting and terminating apparatus for connecting multiple pin-type contacts to the edge of printed circuit boards for interconnecting associated electrical circuits or circuitry thereon. Contacts are preloaded and press fitted into a connector header assembly for immediate use or shipment. The header assembly includes integral guiding and camming means permitting contact insertion or removal from the top or the bottom of the header without the inconvenience of dismounting the assembly. This permits the connector header to be dismounted without disturbing the preload feature thereby avoiding damage to the contacts or the header. Integral means is provided enabling the contacts to be press fitted into holes in the printed circuit board in spite of partial misalignment between contact and hole without damage to the board or to the contacts. Means is also provided permitting the header to receive a contact insertion tool for press fitting contacts into connector header, and also permanently attaching the contacts to the associated printed circuit board, by press fitting.

Preassembled connecting and terminating apparatus for printed wiring

A DIP socket having preloading and antiwicking features. Each socket contains a plurality of unitary metallic contacts wherein each contact has; a pair of outwardly bowed tails; an antiwicking stem; a U-shaped body with a pair of retention latches on the outward portions of the arms of the U-shaped main body, said main portion of the U-shaped body having a flexural surface; and a pair of arcuately-curved, facing, inwardly-bowed spring biasing members above the U-shaped body. The contacts are inserted into a rectangular, unitary housing having a plurality of contact cavities. Each cavity has a guiding taper and pin aperture, camming faces, a guiding chamfer and a retention ledge. One or more of the interior walls of the cavity tapers inwardly from the lower portion to the upper portion of the cavity. The housing may also include raised standoffs on its lower side.

Dip socket having preloading and antiwicking features

A high density solder tail connector assembly for leadless integrated circuit packages. The plastic connector package includes upper and lower header portions each having a plurality of mating terminal reception channels formed therein. The upper header portion includes probing holes to allow ready testing of integrated circuit packages mounted on the connector assembly. Each channel is designed to receive an inner and an outer type of S-shaped spring-beam contact. Each type of unitary contact includes a contacting portion, a generally S-shaped spring-beam portion, a probe portion, a base portion, and a solder tail or wire-wrap portion. The two types of contacts differ with respect to the location of the solder-tail portion. Each contact is provided with an offset or dog-leg portion adjacent to the solder tail portion which allows the two types of solder tail portions to project in a staggered fashion from the underside of the lower header, thus easing spacing requirements for printed circuit board holes into which the solder tail would be placed. Preloading means formed in the upper header portions insure that all contacts are automatically preloaded when the upper and lower header portions are secured together.

High density solder tail connector assembly for leadless integrated

A high density double contacting connector assembly for leadless integrated circuit packages. The plastic connector package includes upper and lower header portions each having a plurality of mating terminal reception channels formed therein. The upper header portion includes probing holes to allow ready testing of integrated circuit packages mounted on the connector assembly. Each channel is designed to receive an S-shaped spring-beam contact. Each type of unitary contact includes an IC terminal contacting portion, a generally S-shaped spring-beam portion, a probe portion, a base portion, and a circuit board contacting portion. Each contact is provided with U-shaped pivot on the base portion for engaging a wall of the terminal reception channels. Preloading means formed in the upper header portions insure that all contacts are automatically preloaded when the upper and lower header portions are secured together.
