A polymer with good compatibility comprising one or more non-ionic water soluble monomers, such as poly(ethylene glycol)(meth)acrylate (PEGMA), is provided that is suitable for use in aerosol hair styling formulations which have improved clarity. There is also provided a hair styling composition comprising (a) one or more fully soluble polymer, and (b) a solvent mixture, and optional other ingredients.

The present invention relates to a process comprising contacting methyl methacrylate or styrene; a C-C-alkyl acrylate; and a polymerizable carboxylic acid monomer with a stable aqueous dispersion of first polymer particles, under emulsion polymerization conditions, to form a stable aqueous dispersion of second polymer particles. The first polymer particles have a Tin the range of from &#x2212;30&#xb0; C. to 30&#xb0; C., and the monomers have a calculated Tin the range of 50&#xb0; C. to 120&#xb0; C. The present invention also relates to the dispersion of second polymer particles, which is useful as a binder to improve freeze-thaw stability in a coatings formulation.

Acrylic latex binder and method of preparation

A method of improving the scrub resistance of a paint is provided. The method involves adding to a paint containing at least one polymeric binder having a glass transition temperature greater than about 20.degree. C. and an average particle size diameter of from about 70 nanometers to about 150 nanometers when said binder is formed from at least one acrylic monomer or from about 100 nanometers to about 50 nanometers when said binder is formed from at least 50% by weight of vinyl acetate, at least one coalescent at a concentration of at least about 10% by weight based on the weight of the polymeric binder and where said coalescent is a solvent for the polymeric binder. The method is particularly useful for improving the scrub resistance of flat latex paints.

An improved foamed hydraulic composition comprising at least one hydraulic substance, from about 20 to about 130 parts water, and from about 0.01-30 parts of a copolymeric foam stabilizer based on 100 parts hydraulic substance, where the copolymeric foam stabilizer is formed from one or more non-ionic, ethylenically-unsaturated monomers and one or more ionic or ionizable ethylenically-unsaturated monomers containing carboxylic acid.
