An apparatus for determining a condition of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler of an internal combustion engine includes a clean EGR cooler module that is configured to estimate the temperature of exhaust gas exiting a clean EGR cooler. The apparatus also includes a fouled EGR cooler module that is configured estimate the temperature of exhaust gas exiting a fouled EGR cooler. Further, the apparatus includes an EGR cooler effectiveness module that is configured to determine a normalized effectiveness of the EGR cooler based on the estimated temperature of exhaust gas exiting a clean EGR cooler and the estimated temperature of exhaust gas exiting a fouled EGR cooler. Additionally, the apparatus includes an EGR cooler condition module that is configured to determine a condition of the EGR cooler based on the normalized effectiveness of the EGR cooler.

EGR cooler condition module and associated system

A system is described for producing an elevated exhaust temperature and reduced NOoutput for an engine. The system includes an internal combustion engine having a common rail fuel system, an exhaust pressure modulation device for the internal combustion engine, and a controller structured to functionally execute operations for elevating the exhaust temperature and reducing the NOoutput. The controller determines a desired engine outlet exhaust temperature, an engine speed, and an engine load. In response to the desired engine outlet exhaust gas temperature, the engine speed, and the engine load, the controller determines an exhaust pressure increase command and a fuel injection command including at least one post-injection event. The common rail fuel system is responsive to the fuel injection command, and the exhaust pressure modulation device is responsive to the exhaust pressure increase command.

Techniques for optimizing engine operations during aftertreatment regeneration

A method and system for controlling a continuously variable transmission (CVT). In one embodiment, the method includes receiving vehicle operation data. The method also includes controlling engine and transmission operations based on the vehicle operation data, fuel efficiency data, and CVT efficiency data.

Continuous variable transmission system

A system is provided for enhancing aftertreatment regeneration capability. The system includes an internal combustion engine producing an exhaust gas stream and an aftertreatment component that treats the exhaust gas stream, where the aftertreatment component includes a desired inlet exhaust gas temperature. The system includes an exhaust gas pressure device that modulates an exhaust pressure value, and a fuel injection system that provides a post-injection event. The system includes a controller that provides an exhaust pressure command and a fuel injection command in response to determining that a temperature of the exhaust gas stream is lower than the desired inlet exhaust gas temperature. The exhaust gas pressure device is responsive to the exhaust pressure command and the fuel injection system is responsive to the fuel injection command.

Techniques for enhancing aftertreatment regeneration capability

A method is disclosed including operations to interpret an engine load level for a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine. In response to determining the engine load level is less than 40% of a maximum engine load level, the method further includes operations to performing a first fuel injection event including less than 25% of a combustion fuel amount, the first fuel injection event occurring before 10 degrees after top dead center (TDC), to perform a second fuel injection event including between 15% and 65% of the combustion fuel amount, the second fuel injection event occurring after 10 degrees after TDC, and to perform third fuel injection event comprising between 10% and 85% of the combustion fuel amount, the third fuel injection event occurring before 63 degrees after TDC.

Emissions reductions through multiple fuel injection events

Various embodiments of an apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for managing regeneration event characteristics. For example, according to one embodiment, an apparatus for controlling the temperature of the output exhaust of an internal combustion engine for a regeneration event on a particulate matter filter includes a regeneration module, a turbocharger thermal management module, a fuel injection thermal management module, and an air intake thermal management module. The regeneration module determines a desired particulate matter filter inlet exhaust gas temperature for a regeneration event. The turbocharger thermal management module determines a variable geometry turbine (VGT) device position strategy. The fuel injection thermal management module determines a fuel injection strategy. The air intake thermal management module determines an intake throttle position strategy. The VGT device position strategy, the post-injection fuel injection strategy, and the intake throttle position strategy cooperatively achieve the desired particulate matter filter inlet exhaust gas temperature and maintain a fuel dilution level of the engine below a maximum fuel dilution level.

Engine performance management during a diesel particulate filter regeneration event

Various embodiments of an apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for managing regeneration event characteristics. For example, according to one embodiment, an apparatus for controlling the temperature of the outlet exhaust of an internal combustion engine for a regeneration event on a particulate matter filter includes a regeneration module and a fuel injection strategy module. The regeneration module is configured to determine a desired engine outlet exhaust gas temperature for a regeneration event. The fuel injection strategy module is configured to determine a regeneration fuel injection strategy for achieving the desired engine outlet exhaust gas temperature. The regeneration fuel injection strategy includes a main fuel injection, a first heat post-injection, and a second heat post-injection. In certain implementations, the fuel injection strategy also includes at least one or two non-heat post-injections for achieving a desired particulate filter inlet exhaust gas temperature.

Thermal management of diesel particulate filter regeneration events

An apparatus that includes a calibration module, a conditions module, and an output module. The calibration module includes a plurality of calibration tables that includes a top-rated torque curve and bottom-rated torque curve for each of a plurality of predetermined engine operating modes of an engine emissions family. The top-rated torque curve corresponds to a top horsepower rating of the engine emissions family and the bottom-rated torque curve corresponds to a bottom horsepower rating of the engine emissions family. The conditions module is configured to determine operating conditions of the internal combustion engine. The output module is configured to command at least one component of the engine to achieve a desired engine output exhaust gas emissions value based at least partially on the operating conditions of the internal combustion engine and a comparison between the top horsepower rating and bottom horsepower rating of the engine emissions family.

Apparatus, system, and method for calibrating an internal combustion engine

A method is disclosed for thermal management of an engine comprising a continuously variable transmission. The method includes an engine capability module storing a torque-speed map comprising a first region where the engine inefficiently regenerates an aftertreatment device, a second region where the engine efficiently regenerates the aftertreatment device, and a third region where the engine is not capable of regenerating the aftertreatment device. The method further includes an aftertreatment determination module determining a regeneration index, an operating conditions module determining an engine speed and an engine load, and a speed-load adjustment module adjusting a speed-load target. The method further includes the speed-load adjustment module adjusting the speed-load target to a preferred region along equal power curves of the torque-speed map based on the regeneration index.
