Disclosed is a pain detection system and method. Preferred methods include capturing imaging data from patient using functional near-infrared spectroscopy. In methods of the invention, pain may be assessed from a non-responsive patient. Preferred methods may further include measuring hemodynamic parameters using the optical imaging data and averaging the measured hemodynamic parameters to reduce background noise. Additionally, a pattern in the averaged hemodynamic parameters is identified and the pattern is compared to a predetermined associated with patient pain. The method further includes detecting, by the processor, a similarity between the pattern and the predetermined pattern and outputting a signal indicating patient pain.

Pain detection system and method utilizing near-infrared spectroscopy

A method for recognizing awareness in a subject includes performing optical imaging on at least one cortical region of the brain of the subject. Optical imaging data are obtained over time measuring one or more hemodynamic parameters in the at least one cortical region of the subject's brain. An observed variation pattern is determined in the measured hemodynamic parameters, and the observed variation pattern is compared to one or more known variation patterns characteristic of awareness. Substantial similarity between the observed and known variation patterns signals awareness in the subject.

CNS assay for prediction of therapeutic efficacy for neuropathic pain and other functional illnesses

A method for measuring indices of brain activity includes non-invasively obtaining signals of central nervous system (CNS) activity, localizing signals to specific anatomical and functional CNS regions, correlating the signals from pain and reward brain regions, and interpreting the correlation results. The results of interpreting the correlation results can be used for objectively measuring, in individual humans or animals, their responses to motivationally salient stimuli including but not limited to stimuli which are internal or external, conscious or non-conscious, pharmacological or non-pharmacological therapies, and diseased based processes. This method for measuring brain activity in reward/aversive central nervous system regions, can further be used to determine the efficacy of compounds.
