Continuous in-line process for making ink-jet recording media comprising a radiation-cured coating layer

A continuous in-line process for manufacturing ink-jet recording media is provided. The process includes applying a radiation-curable coating to a surface of a substrate material, irradiating the radiation-curable coating to form a 'freshly' irradiated coating that undergoes a curing process, and applying an ink-receptive coating over the 'freshly' irradiated coating to form an ink-jet recording media.

Ink-jet recording media and continuous in-line process for manufacturing such media are provided. The media can be printed with ink-jet printers to form images having good color density, brilliance, and resolution. The ink-jet recording media include a paper substrate coated on one surface with a radiation-curable composition and an ink-receptive composition. The back surface of the paper may be coated with a polymeric coating to reduce curl and improve dimensional stability. The media have a water vapor transmission rate of no greater than 12 grams/100 square inches/24 hours and preferably have a surface gloss of at least 70.

This invention relates to methods for making ink-jet recording media using hot-melt extrudable ink-receptive compositions. The melt-extrudable compositions comprise a blend of a melt-extrudable polyvinyl alcohol composition and poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline), a hydrolyzed copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate, ethylene/acrylic acid copolymers or ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers. The invention also encompasses media made by such methods. The media can be used to form high quality, multicolored images.

This invention relates to electrophotographic recording media that are suitable for use in high speed color copiers and printers. The media are composites comprising: a) a film substrate having a front surface coated with a toner-receptive layer and a back surface coated with a polymeric layer, and b) a paper backing that is attached to the back surface of the film substrate. The toner-receptive layer comprises a mixture of a hydrophobic toner-compatible polymer and hydrophilic toner-compatible polymer. The paper backing has a Sheffield Smoothness greater than 70 SU.
