Electronic devices, displays, and methods are provided for performing pixel grouping to enable efficient display operation at higher frame rates and lower image resolutions without sacrificing significant image quality. An electronic display may include a number of rows of display pixels and driving circuitry. The driving circuitry may receive a frame of image data and drive a set of adjacent groups of rows of equal number using the frame of image data. Adjacent groups of rows may respectively include two or more adjacent rows.

Electronic display pixel grouping to mitigate motion blur

Certain embodiments are directed to techniques (e.g., a method, an apparatus, and non-transitory computer readable medium storing code or instructions executable by one or more processors) for mitigating the flicker on the displays at low driving frequencies due to drops of the voltage holding ratio of the materials for the display. The techniques to compensate for flicker in a liquid crystal display can include generating a dynamic waveform for the backlight of the display. The dynamic waveform can be synchronized with the driving rate of the liquid crystal display such that the luminosity of the backlight increases during periods when the voltage-holding ratio drops in the materials of the display. In this way, a liquid crystal material can be utilized in a display to generate reduced power consumption with liquid crystal rate minimizing the flicker in response to the drops of the voltage-holding ratio.

Techniques to compensate for flicker at low refresh rates

Aspects of the subject technology relate to pulsed backlight operation for a display backlight. Backlight pulse patterns are provided that include steady state pulse patterns to be applied during operation of a liquid crystal display unit of the display at a corresponding frame rate. The backlight pulse patterns can be arranged to prevent visible artifacts such as flicker or strobing, particularly at or near a transition between LCD frame rates. In some scenarios, transition pulse patterns are provided.

Pulsed backlight systems and methods

A display may have a pixel array such as a liquid crystal pixel array. The pixel array may be illuminated by a backlight unit that includes an array of light-emitting diodes. A backlight brightness selection circuit may select brightness values for the light-emitting diodes. The backlight brightness selection circuit may select the brightness values based on image data, based on brightness values used in previous image frames, based on device information, and/or based on sensor information. The backlight brightness selection circuit may select the backlight brightness levels to mitigate visible artifacts such as flickering and halo. The backlight levels selected by the backlight brightness selection may be modified by a power consumption compensation circuit. The power consumption compensation circuit may estimate the amount of power consumption required to operate the backlight using the target brightness levels and may modify the target brightness levels to meet maximum power consumption requirements.

Passive components adapted for integration with at least one active semiconductor device, in an embodiment, comprise at least one metallic structure dimensioned and arranged to absorb and/or reflect a major fraction of incident electromagnetic radiation received at one or more wavelengths of a first group of wavelengths. This prevents radiation within the first group of wavelengths from being received and/or processed by the at least one active device. In an embodiment, one or more metallic structures are dimensioned and arranged to direct an amount of incident radiation, received at one or more wavelengths of a second group of wavelengths, sufficient to enable receiving or processing of incident radiation within the second group of wavelengths by the at least one active semiconductor device. In some embodiments, the passive component comprises a passive optical filter for use in spectroscopic applications, and the active semiconductor device is a detector or sensor.
