A liquid crystal display (LCD) system for a head mounted display includes an LCD panel and a backlight unit. The LCD panel includes a color filter on array (COA) configuration. The backlight unit includes a light adjustment layer to adjust at least one characteristic of illumination light from a light source to tune the illumination light for enlarging an emission cone of display light.

In particular embodiments, a computing system may receive receiving a first image frame of a sequence of image frames to be shown on a display having a plurality of backlight zones. The computing system may compute backlight unit statistics of the first image frame. The backlight unit statistics may represent grayscale levels for the plurality of backlight zones. The computing system may compute a global dimming gain for adjusting color values and backlight unit intensity of a second image frame of the sequence of image frames based on the backlight unit statistics of the first image frame. The computing system may adjust, using the global dimming gain, the color values and the backlight unit intensity of the second image frame.

A switchable waveplate includes a substrate, a first electrode layer on the substrate, an alignment layer on the first electrode layer and including alignment patterns formed thereon, a liquid crystal layer on the alignment layer, and a second electrode layer on the liquid crystal layer. The alignment patterns are determined based on angles of interest at a plurality of regions of the switchable waveplate. The liquid crystal layer includes liquid crystal molecules that are arranged according to the alignment patterns and are pre-tilted when no electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer. The first electrode layer and the second electrode layer are configured to apply electric fields of different magnitudes to a plurality of zones of the switchable waveplate.

Examples are disclosed herein that relate to displaying modification regions on a multi-display device. One example provides a multi-display device comprising a plurality of displays, the multi-display device storing line offset data defining a line offset to apply to a displayed image to correct for display misalignment, and modification region data defining one or more modification regions that each modifies an appearance of the displayed image. The multi-display device is configured to set a displayed location of a first active area based upon the line offset data for a first display, and set a displayed location of a first modification region for the first display based upon the line offset data for the first display.

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to a display assembly with dynamic brightness compensation. The display assembly includes a display element, a controller, and a backlight device. The controller obtains gaze information for a user's eye, generates emission instructions based at least in part on the gaze information, and dynamically assigns at least a portion of a plurality of light sources in the backlight device to a plurality of regions based at least in part on the gaze information. The light sources emit light through the display element, and the display element spatially modulates the light received from the backlight device to generate image light. Each subset of the light sources dynamically assigned to a respective region emits a portion of the light having brightness adjusted by a respective adjustment value in accordance with the emission instructions.

The example can also include a chassis, the display received in the chassis and secured to the chassis beneath the inactive deadband with adhesive. The example can further include a fastening assembly positioned below the inactive deadband and farther beneath the plane than the adhesive, where the fastening assembly creates a retention force between the display and the chassis.

To that end, the display panel may include a quarter-wave birefringent layer between the top polarizer of the display panel and a layer inside the display panel that the image light reflects from, such as a black grid layer or an active matrix layer.

An electronic device includes a backlight unit and a liquid crystal layer disposed proximate to the backlight unit. The backlight unit is configured to provide illumination across a viewable display area of the electronic device. The viewable display area includes a plurality of zones. The liquid crystal layer is configured to selectively filter the illumination provided by the backlight unit. A processor is coupled to the backlight unit and to the liquid crystal layer. The processor is configured to determine, based on data indicative of content to be displayed, a respective backlight brightness level of each zone of the plurality of zones and to generate liquid crystal control signaling for the liquid crystal layer. The processor is further configured to adjust the respective backlight brightness levels and/or the liquid crystal control signaling, to compensate for distortions arising from defects in the backlight unit and/or the liquid crystal layer.

An electronic device includes a backlight unit and a liquid crystal layer adjacent the backlight unit. The backlight unit has a plurality of planar emission devices distributed over a viewable display area. The plurality of planar emission devices are disposed in a configurable zone arrangement having a plurality of zones of the viewable area. Each zone includes at least one planar emission device. The liquid crystal layer is configured to selectively filter light generated by the plurality of planar emission devices. The electronic device further includes a processor coupled to the backlight unit and configured to control a brightness level of the at least one planar emission device in each zone separately from other planar emission devices in other zones.
