Systems and methods for managing visual allocation are provided herein that use models to determine states based on visual data and, based thereon, output feedback based on the determined states. Visual data is initially obtained by a visual allocation management system. The visual data includes eye image sequences of a person in a particular state, such as engaging in a task or activity. Visual features can be identified from the visual data, such that glance information including direction and duration can be calculated. The visual data, information derived therefrom, and/or other contextual data is input into the models, which correspond to states, to calculate probabilities that the particular state that the person is engaged in is one of the modeled states. Based on the state identified as having the highest probability, an optimal feedback, such as a warning or instruction, can be output to a connected devices, systems, or objects.

Systems and methods for providing visual allocation management

Systems and methods for assessing resource allocation are provided. In some exemplary embodiments, the system uses an attention buffer to classify glances by a person and/or automated system, the buffer determining the impact the glances have on the person and/or automated system's situation awareness level. The attention buffer calculates on a continuous basis a buffer value that is representative of the situation awareness level for the person and/or automated system at a particular moment in time. The calculated buffer values, referred to as moment-to-moment buffer values, among other names, can be used as data points, and/or they can also be used to direct action by the system and/or person to alter the situation awareness level of the person and/or automated system.

Systems and methods for using an attention buffer to improve resource allocation management

Methods and apparatus are provided for determining when a task may be performed on a vehicle that is moving. The method includes generating a driver workload value based on at least one task parameter describing a predetermined attribute of the task and preventing a user from performing the task if the driver workload value exceeds a predetermined driver workload threshold and the vehicle is moving.

A method to selectively project graphical images upon a transparent windscreen head up display of a vehicle based upon visual information present in a peripheral zone of vision includes monitoring a location of visual information corresponding to critical information with respect to the windscreen, and processing the location of the visual information to generate display requirements describing the visual information as present in the peripheral zone of vision. Processing the location includes monitoring an estimated operator gaze location with respect to the windscreen, comparing the estimated operator gaze location to the location of visual information, and generating the display requirements when the estimated operator gaze location is distant from the location of visual information by more than a threshold distance. The method further includes generating the graphical images to be projected based upon the display requirements, and projecting the graphical images upon the transparent windscreen head up display based upon the estimated operator gaze location.

Peripheral salient feature enhancement on full-windshield head-up display

A method to selectively project graphical images upon a transparent windscreen head up display of a vehicle based upon visual information present in a peripheral zone of vision includes monitoring a location of visual information corresponding to critical information with respect to the windscreen, processing the location of the visual information to generate display requirements describing the visual information as present in the peripheral zone of vision, generating the graphical images to be projected based upon the display requirements, and projecting the graphical images upon the transparent windscreen head up display based upon the estimated operator gaze location.

A vehicle to pedestrian communication system includes a vehicle-based device having a transmitter and receiver for communicating global positioning of the vehicle. The transmitter broadcasts a global position of the vehicle as part of a vehicle periodic beacon message. A pedestrian-based device is carried by a pedestrian. The pedestrian-based device has a transmitter and receiver for communicating a global position of the pedestrian as part of a pedestrian periodic beacon message. A positional awareness of the vehicle in relation to the pedestrian is assessed by at least one of the vehicle-based device or the pedestrian-based device based on the positioning of the vehicle in relation to the pedestrian. An alert is provided to at least one of the vehicle or the pedestrian indicating a presence of the vehicle or pedestrian based on the respective global positions of the pedestrian and the vehicle.

Vehicle to entity communication

An apparatus and method are disclosed for real-time assessment of driver workload by a vehicle device. To determine driver workload, the system monitors the driver interaction with the vehicle device. The driver interaction is then used to determine an estimated driver workload based on the driver interaction. In one embodiment, the vehicle device has one or more buttons configured to be pressed by the driver and each of the one or more buttons has an assigned driver workload value. The system sums the workload value of the buttons pressed by the driver over a moving time window to determine the estimated driver workload.

Method for real-time assessment of driver workload by a navigation or telematics device

Methods and apparatus are provided for adaptively locking out a display on a vehicle device based on user interaction. A method begins by counting a number of user initiated display changes with an event counter, and timing the user initiated display changes with an event timer. The method continues by comparing the number of user initiated display changes in the event counter to an allowable number of user initiated display changes corresponding to the time in the event timer, and disabling the display for a display lockout time period if the number of user initiated display changes exceeds the allowable number of user initiated display changes.
