Glass and glass ceramic compositions having a combination of lithium disilicate and &#x3b2;-spodumene crystalline phases along with methods of making the glass and glass ceramic compositions are described. The compositions are compatible with conventional rolling and float processes and have high mechanical strength and fracture resistance. Further, the compositions are able to be chemically tempered to even higher strength glass ceramics that are useful as large substrates in multiple applications.

High strength glass-ceramics having lithium disilicate and beta-spodumene structures

Crystallizable glasses, glass-ceramics, IXable glass-ceramics, and IX glass-ceramics are disclosed. The glass-ceramics exhibit &#x3b2;-spodumene ss as the predominant crystalline phase. These glasses and glass-ceramics, in mole %, include: 62-75 SiO; 10.5-17 AlO; 5-13 LiO; 0-4 ZnO; 0-8 MgO; 2-5 TiO; 0-4 BO; 0-5 NaO; 0-4 KO; 0-2 ZrO; 0-7 PO; 0-0.3 FeO; 0-2 MnOx; and 0.05-0.2 SnO. Additionally, these glasses and glass-ceramics exhibit the following criteria:   Furthermore, the glass-ceramics exhibit an opacity &#x2267;about 85% over the wavelength range of 400-700 nm for an about 0.8 mm thickness and colors an observer angle of 10&#xb0; and a CIE illuminant F02 determined with specular reflectance included of a* between &#x2212;3 and +3, b* between &#x2212;6 and +6, and L* between 88 and 97.

White, opaque, &#x3b2;-spodumene/rutile glass-ceramic articles and methods for making the same

Crystallizable glasses, glass-ceramics, IXable glass-ceramics, and IX glass-ceramics are disclosed. The glass-ceramics exhibit &#x3b2;-spodumene ss as the predominant crystalline phase. Gallium nitride semiconductor device on SOI and process for making same

The invention relates to glass articles suitable for use as electronic device housing/enclosure or protective cover which comprise a glass material. Particularly, a housing/enclosure/cover comprising an ion-exchanged glass exhibiting the following attributes (1) radio, and microwave frequency transparency, as defined by a loss tangent of less than 0.03 and at a frequency range of between 15 MHz to 3.0 GHz; (2) infrared transparency; (3) a fracture toughness of greater than 0.6 MPa&#xb7;m; (4) a 4-point bend strength of greater than 350 MPa; (5) a Vickers hardness of at least 450 kgf/mmand a Vickers median/radial crack initiation threshold of at least 5 kgf, (6) a Young's Modulus ranging between about 50 to 100 GPa; (7) a thermal conductivity of less than 2.0 W/m&#xb0; C., and (9) and at least one of the following attributes: (i) a compressive surface layer having a depth of layer (DOL) greater and a compressive stress greater than 400 MPa, or, (ii) a central tension of more than 20 MPa.

Durable glass housings/enclosures for electronic devices

A transparent armor laminate system is described that utilizes a glass-ceramic material as the strike-face material, one or a plurality of intermediate layers, and a backing material. This laminate system offers improved performance with reduced weight over conventional all-glass or all-glass-ceramic transparent armor systems. The glass-ceramic material consists of a glass phase and a crystalline phase, the crystalline phase being selected from a group consisting of beta-quartz, mullite and combinations thereof.

Hybrid laminated transparent armor

The invention relates to opaque, colored glass-ceramic articles and to the production of opaque, colored glass-ceramic articles which can be readily formed to a desired shape using standard metal-working tools. The glass-ceramic material used to make such articles contains mica crystals as the predominant phase. The desired color is obtained through the addition of a colorant system to the precursor glass. In a particular embodiment the invention is directed to a black glass-ceramic article, the black color being obtained by the addition of iron oxides in levels as high as 20 wt %, which can yield a glass-ceramic having an iron-rice mica phase and/or a glass ceramic having an iron-rich mica phase plus an iron oxide phase.

Colored machinable glass-ceramics

The present invention relates to a semiconductor-on-insulator structure including a semiconductor component comprised of substantially single-crystal semiconductor material layer and a single-crystal semiconductor material with an enhanced oxygen content layer; an oxide glass material layer; and a glass-ceramic layer.

Glass-ceramic-based semiconductor-on-insulator structures and method for making the same

The invention is directed to transparent glass-ceramic materials for use in transparent armor systems. Applications include armor systems for ground vehicles and aircraft as well as personal protective equipment. The glass-ceramic materials according to the invention exhibit a ballistic limit vs. areal density line slope of 1.0 or greater, preferably 1.1 or greater and more preferably 1.2 or greater. The crystalline phase of the glass ceramic materials may include &#x3b2;-quartz, spinel, spinel solid solutions, mullite and phases known in the art to be transparent.

Transparent glass-ceramic armor

Geopolymer composite materials having low coefficient of thermal expansion are disclosed. The materials are useful in high temperature applications due to their low coefficient of thermal expansion and high strength. Also disclosed is a boron modified water glass geopolymer composition that is compatible with ceramic particulate material such as cordierite and fused silica. The geopolymer composite may be extruded to form structures such as honeycomb monoliths, flow filters or used as a plugging or skinning cement and may be fired at temperatures at or below 1100&#xb0; C. Both the structures and the cement have high green and fired strength, a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and good acid durability. The cost of manufacturing objects using the material of the present invention is substantially reduced, in comparison with typically production methods of cordierite based bodies, due to the substantially shortened firing times.

Geopolymer composites and structures formed therefrom

The invention is directed to highly crystalline, frit-sintered glass-ceramic materials and seals made using them that are suitable for solid oxide fuel cell applications. The seals have a coefficient of thermal expansion in the range of 70-130&#xd7;10&#xb0; C., preferably 85-115&#xd7;10&#xb0; C. The glass-ceramic materials have a crystalline component and a glass component, the crystalline component being &#x3e;50% of the glass-ceramic and the glass component being &#x3c;50%. In one preferred embodiment the crystalline component is &#x3e;75%. Regarding the crystalline component only, &#x3e;50% of the crystals in the crystalline component of the glass-ceramic has a structure selected from the structural groups represented by walstromite, cyclowollastonite, &#x3bc;-(Ca,Sr)SiO, kalsilite, kaliophilite and wollastonite (the primary crystalline phase) and the remaining &#x3c;50% of the crystalline component is at least one secondary crystalline phase. Generally, the glass-ceramics of the invention are useful as metal-to-metal, metal-to-ceramic and ceramic-to-ceramic sealing agents.

Glass-ceramic seals for use in solid oxide fuel cells

The present invention relates to semiconductor-on-insulator structures having strained semiconductor layers. According to one embodiment of the invention, a semiconductor-on-insulator structure has a first layer including a semiconductor material, attached to a second layer including a glass or glass-ceramic, with the strain point of the glass or glass-ceramic equal to or greater than about 800&#xb0; C.
