The present disclosure relates to metallocene catalysts for use in polymerization processes. Such catalysis may be used to generate long chain polymers with low long chain branching and high molecular weights. Additionally, the size of the polymers produced can be controlled by modifying the ratio of MAO or other activator to metallocene catalyst.

Substituted zirconocenes catalysts and methods of use in polymerization reactions

Catalysts useful for polymerizing olefins are disclosed. The catalysts comprise an activator and a Group 4 metal complex that incorporates a dianionic, tridentate 2-(2-aryloxy)quinoline or 2-(2-aryloxy)dihydroquinoline ligand. In one aspect, supported catalysts are prepared by first combining a boron compound having Lewis acidity with excess alumoxane to produce an activator mixture, followed by combining the activator mixture with a support and the tridentate, dianionic Group 4 metal complex. The catalysts are easy to synthesize, support, and activate, and they enable facile production of high-molecular-weight polyolefins.

Catalysts based on 2-(2-aryloxy)quinoline or 2-(2-aryloxy)dihydroquinoline ligands

A method of preparing supported catalysts useful for olefin polymerization is described. The catalysts comprise a Group 4 metal complex that incorporates a tridentate dianionic ligand. An activator mixture is first made from a boron compound having Lewis acidity and an excess of an alumoxane. The activator mixture is then combined with a support and the Group 4 metal complex to give a supported catalyst. The method provides an active, supported catalyst capable of making high-molecular-weight polyolefins.

Method for preparing non-metallocene catalysts

Catalysts useful for polymerizing olefins are disclosed. The catalysts comprise an activator and a Group 4 metal complex that incorporates a dianionic, tridentate 2-aryl-8-anilinoquinoline ligand. In one aspect, supported catalysts are prepared by first combining a boron compound having Lewis acidity with excess alumoxane to produce an activator mixture, followed by combining the activator mixture with a support and the tridentate, dianionic Group 4 metal complex. The catalysts are easy to synthesize, support, and activate, and they enable facile production of high-molecular-weight polyolefins.

Catalysts based on 2-aryl-8-anilinoquinoline ligands

A slurry process for polymerizing ethylene is disclosed. The process comprises polymerizing ethylene in a first reactor in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst comprising an activator and a supported dimethylsilyl-bridged indeno[1,2-b]indolyl zirconium complex to produce an ethylene homopolymer, removing some of the unreacted hydrogen, and reacting the homopolymer slurry in a second reactor with ethylene and a C-C&#x3b1;-olefin to produce polyethylene. The polyethylene has weight-average molecular weight greater than 150,000, broad molecular weight distribution, low long-chain branching, and it provides pipes or molded articles with good environmental stress crack resistance.

Olefin polymerization process

An ethylene polymerization process is disclosed. Ethylene is polymerized in two slurry reaction zones with a C-Calpha-olefin in the presence of a single-site catalyst capable of making a high molecular weight polyolefin. The process yields medium density and linear low density polyethylene having a bimodal molecular weight distribution and a melt index from about 0.10 to about 0.80. Films from the polyethylene have superior impact properties.

Polyethylene process

The present invention provides a catalyst comprising a diimine complex coordinated a transition metal. The complex includes a Group 3 to 10 transition or lanthanide metal and one or more anionic or neutral ligands in an amount that satisfies the valency of the metal such that the complex has a net zero charge. The present invention also discloses a method for coupling olefins utilizing the catalyst of the present invention.

Diimine complexes for olefin polymerization

A dual olefin polymerization process is disclosed. The process uses a bridged indenoindolyl ligand-containing Group 4 transition metal complex and an activator. It is carried out in multiple stages or in multiple reactors. The same complex and the same activator are used in all stages or reactors. Different polyolefins are made in different stages or reactors by varying the monomer compositions, hydrogen concentrations, or both. The process of the invention produces polyolefins which have broad molecular weight distributions, composition distributions, or both.

Process for manufacturing single-site polyolefins

A catalyst system for the polymerization of olefins which includes a solid catalyst component and a cocatalyst. The solid catalyst component includes the contact product of silica, an alkyl magnesium-containing species, a compound having the structural formula E(YZ),X,, where E is an atom of an element of Group 14 of the Periodic Table of the Elements; Y is an atom of an element of Group 16 of the Periodic Table of the Elements; Z is hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or mixtures thereof; X is hydrogen, halogen, hydrocarbyl or mixtures thereof; and m is an integer of 1 to 4 and a tetravalent titanium compound. The cocatalyst includes a mixture of at least two compounds having the structural formula AlR,X,, where R is the same or different and is hydrocarbyl; X,is halogen; and x is an integer of 1 to 3 with the proviso that at least one of the compounds is defined by x being 3 and at least one of the compounds as defined by x being 1 or 2.

Olefin polymerization catalyst system

A supported olefin polymerization catalyst system and a method of making it are disclosed. The catalyst system comprises: (a) a support chemically treated with an organoaluminum, organosilicon, organomagnesium, or organoboron compound; (b) a single-site catalyst that contains a polymerization-stable, heteroatomic ligand; and (c) an activator. Chemical treatment is a key to making supported heterometallocenes that have high activity and long shelf-lives, and can effectively incorporate comonomers.

Supported olefin polymerization catalysts

A vanadium-containing catalyst system particularly suited to the polymerization of olefin polymers. The catalyst system includes a supported, first catalyst component prepared by contacting silica with hexaalkyldisilazane and thereupon with (1) a compound or complex which includes at least one carbon to magnesium covalent bond and (2) a compound which includes at least one carbon to Group 13 metal covalent bond. The sequence of contact of the silica with compound or complex (1) and compound (2) is optional. However, unless the compound or complex (1) and the compound (2) contact the silica simultaneously, the product of this contact is next contacted with whichever of compound (1) or (2) does not initially contact the silica. The product of the step of contacting with compounds (1) and (2) is washed and then contacted with a vanadium compound which includes at least one halogen atom. Finally, the product of the vanadium compound contacting step is contacted with an alcohol. A second component of the catalyst system is an organoaluminum compound cocatalyst. The catalyst system also includes a halocarbon compound promoter as a third catalyst component.

Vanadium-containing catalyst system

A vanadium-containing catalyst system particularly suited to the polymerization of blow moldable olefin polymers. The catalyst system includes a supported, first catalyst component prepared by contacting preheated silica, with (1) a compound or complex which includes at least one carbon to magnesium covalent bond and (2) a compound which includes at least one carbon to Group III metal covalent bond. The sequence of contact of the silica with compound or complex (1) and compound (2) is optional. However, unless the compound or complex (1) and the compound (2) contact the silica simultaneously, the product of this contact is next contacted with whichever of compound (1) or (2) does not initially contact the silica. The product of the step of contacting with compounds (1) and (2) is contacted with a vanadium compound which includes at least one halogen atom. Finally, the product of the vanadium compound contacting step is contacted with an alcohol. A second component of the catalyst system is an organoaluminum compound cocatalyst. The catalyst system also includes a halocarbon compound promoter as a third catalyst component.

The present invention is directed to a supported tungsten-based catalyst composition useful for the dimerization of alpha-olefins including ethylene. More particularly, the catalyst composition of the instant invention comprises an organic or inorganic support material that is contacted with a tungsten salt and an organic amine compound.
