A first device may establish a connection with a second device, and may provide a connection check RPC message to the second device. The first device may receive a verification RPC message from the second device, and may provide, to the second device, a sync domains RPC request that includes a first list of active domains with associated address pools. The first device may receive, from the second device, a sync domains RPC response that includes threshold values for the active domains included in the first list of active domains, and may provide, to the second device, a sync pools RPC request that includes a first list of address pools associated with the active domains. The first device may receive, from the second device, a sync pools RPC response that includes confirmation of the first list of address pools, and may allocate addresses of an address pool to a CPE.

Network device interface for supporting centralized address pool management

Techniques are described that allow a network device, such as a router, to dynamically build VLAN interfaces based on subscriber information strings included within packets. In particular, the network device comprises an interface controller and a forwarding controller, where the forwarding controller receives the packet over an Ethernet port and forwards the received packet to the interface controller. The packet includes both Ethernet tagging information and a subscriber information string. The interface controller comprises an Ethernet module that dynamically builds a primary virtual local area network (VLAN) sub-interface (PVS) based on the Ethernet tagging information. The Ethernet module also dynamically builds a subscriber VLAN sub-interface (SVS) based on the subscriber information string. The SVS allows the network device to distinguish between subscribers residing on the same VLAN, and, therefore, to provide subscriber specific services.

Dynamic building of VLAN interfaces based on subscriber information strings

Techniques are described that allow a network device, such as a router, to forward data packets received from a subscriber device to an Ethernet virtual local area network (VLAN) interface within the network device where the VLAN interface has been dynamically built based on a subscriber information string. For example, a primary VLAN sub-interface (PVS) and a subscriber VLAN sub-interface (SVS) may each be dynamically built over a statically built VLAN major interface. In particular, the network device comprises a forwarding controller, where the forwarding controller receives a data packet over an Ethernet port. The network device accesses upper-layer protocol information within the data packet to determine an SVS within the network device to which to forward the data packet based on the upper-layer protocol information.

Forwarding traffic to VLAN interfaces built based on subscriber information strings

A method, apparatus and article of manufacture for filtering a data packet. The data packet is classified a filter type according to a classification criteria. A size value of the data packet is added to a data count for the filter type. The filter type is compared to a committed information rate (CIR). The data packet is filtered if the data count exceeds the CIR or a burst rate. A status the data packet may optionally be altered if the data count exceeds the CIR. A priority of the data packet may optionally be reclassified if the data count exceeds the CIR.
