A focused treatment tip (FTT) for controlling the evaporation rate and providing targeted delivery of low temperature liquified gases for contact with living tissue includes a contoured body. When filled with liquified gas, the device insulates the gas from waste heat sources, such as the surrounding environment. The device can control the evaporation rate of the liquified gas at the treatment site. The controlled evaporation rate affects the rate of heat transfer from the treated tissue allowing for controlled exposure times and desired outcomes. The device can be used with various application tips to further define the target tissue area to be treated while minimizing collateral damage to surrounding tissue and isolating the gas within the contoured body and focusing heat transfer to the desired treatment area. The device may use transparent materials that make the treatment visible to the operator while the liquified gas is evaporating.

Focused treatment tip design and method to optimize heat transfer through low temperature fluids and gases

A channel-less microfluidic pump includes a cartridge including a substrate and an actuatable film layer disposed on the substrate, and a manifold having at least three actuatable void volumes separated by a plurality of wall sections and an actuatable flexible layer disposed on the manifold interfacing the actuatable film layer. In operation, the pump can be in an unactuated state wherein the actuatable film layer is disposed against the surface of the substrate or an actuated state wherein at least a portion of the flexible layer and a corresponding portion of the actuatable film layer are deflected into a corresponding void volume thus forming a fluidic volume between the deflected portion of the actuatable film layer and the surface of the substrate. In the actuated state, there is a fluidic gap between immediately adjacent void volumes formed by a thinned region of the flexible layer at a point of contact with a top surface of a wall section. A method of transporting fluid using the channel-less microfluidic pump is described.

The portable cryosurgical device is economical, easy to use and operate, and delivers cryogenic material such as nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide gas in any direction or orientation. The delivered materials destroy target tissue using extremely cold temperatures and the abrasives formed when the cryogenic material becomes a solid. The device includes a portable countertop enclosure housing a cryogen source, a cryogen flow tube in fluid communication with the cryogen source, and a flow path assembly. The flow path assembly includes a valve between the cryogen source and the cryogen flow tube having substantially zero dead volume. The flow path assembly can include a quick-connect cryogen tank adapter and an in-line cryogen filter. The flow path assembly delivers liquefied compressed gas from the cryogen source to a terminal end of the cryogen flow tube without a phase change occurring in the flow path.

Plastic microfluidic structures having a substantially rigid diaphragm that actuates between a relaxed state wherein the diaphragm sits against the surface of a substrate and an actuated state wherein the diaphragm is moved away from the substrate. As will be seen from the following description, the microfluidic structures formed with this diaphragm provide easy to manufacture and robust systems, as well readily made components such as valves and pumps.

Self-contained biological assay apparatus, methods, and applications

A method is provided for purifying nucleic acid from a sample in a microfluidic device. The method can be used to purify nucleic acids from any source known in the art that comprises nucleic acids, such as prokaryotic or eukaryotic organisms, viruses, cell, tissues, organs, etc. In a specific example, the tissue is whole blood. The method for purifying nucleic acid may run fully automated in the microfluidic device.

The systems and methods disclosed herein include a microfluidic system, comprising a pneumatic manifold having a plurality of apertures, and a chip manifold having channels disposed therein for routing pneumatic signals from respective ones of the apertures to a plurality of valves in a microfluidic chip, wherein the channels route the pneumatic signals in accordance with a configuration of the plurality of valves in the microfluidic chip.

Microfluidic systems

A microfluidic device for analyzing a sample of interest is provided. The microfluidic device can comprise a microfluidic device body, wherein the microfluidic device body comprises a sample preparation area, a nucleic acid amplification area, a nucleic acid analysis area, and a network of fluid channels. Each of the sample preparation area, the nucleic acid amplification area and the nucleic acid analysis area are fluidly interconnected to at least one of the other two areas by at least one of the fluid channels. Using the microfluidic device, sample preparation can be combined with amplification of a biologically active molecule, and a suitable biological sample can be provided for analysis and/or detection of a molecule of interest. The small-scale apparatus and methods provided are easier, faster, less expensive, and equally efficacious compared to larger scale equipment for the preparation and analysis of a biological sample.
