Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques and apparatus for operating a wireless communication device pursuant to radio frequency (RF) exposure compliance. A method that may be performed by a wireless device includes determining a base reserve and a dynamic reserve for each of a plurality of radios; and transmitting a signal with at least one of the radios at a transmit power determined based at least in part on one or more maximum time-averaged RF exposure limits associated with each of the radios and on the base reserve and the dynamic reserve for each of the radios.

Energy allocation among multiple radios for radio frequency (RF) exposure compliance

Techniques and apparatus for determining a transmit power limit based on sensor spatial coverage. A method that may be performed by a wireless communication device includes selecting a beam for transmission of a signal, determining a transmit power limit based at least in part on an overlap between the selected beam and a coverage zone of a sensor, and transmitting the signal via the beam at a transmit power based at least in part on the determined transmit power limit.

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques and apparatus for radio frequency (RF) exposure compliance using device state information (e.g., a device state index (DSI)). Certain aspects may utilize the device information in simultaneous radio transmission scenarios, such as for simultaneous sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave (mmWave) radio transmission scenarios. In some transmission scenarios, the device state information may be applied in real time to account for a lower mmWave RF exposure contribution to the total RF exposure, thereby providing for potentially increased transmission power from the sub-6 GHz radio.

Simultaneous primary and secondary radio frequency link transmissions are described. The transmissions are restricted to within radio frequency exposure limits. A method is described that includes determining an unused power margin between an average transmit power of a primary radio and the transmit power limit. A combination of a portion of the unused power margin and a secondary reserve transmit power are allocated to the secondary radio. The average transmit power of the secondary radio is restricted to within the combination.

In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may identify an available energy for uplink transmission of a plurality of communication links of the UE. The UE may configure, from the available energy, a first set of energy allocations for the plurality of communication links. The UE may configure a second set of energy allocations for one or more communication links of the plurality of communication links, wherein the second set of energy allocations are allocated from a remainder of the available energy after the first set of energy allocations are allocated. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may allocate a first amount of power to one or more radios for a time window based on radio frequency (RF) exposure information and one or more other criteria. The UE may allocate a second amount of power to a selected channel or communication utilized by at least one radio of the one or more radios for one or more time frames within the time window based on the first amount of power allocated to the at least one radio for the time window. A method that may be performed by a user equipment (UE) generally includes transmitting a first signal at a first transmission power based on time-averaged RF exposure measurements over a time window and storing RF exposure information associated with the time window. The method may also include detecting that an exception event associated with the UE occurred and transmitting a second signal at a second transmission power based at least in part on the stored RF exposure information in response to the detection of the event.

In certain aspects, a method implemented in a wireless device includes determining a specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution for a first wireless communication technology, determining a power density (PD) distribution for a second wireless communication technology, and combining the SAR distribution and the PD distribution to generate a combined RF exposure distribution. The method also includes determining at least one first maximum allowable power level and at least one second maximum allowable power level for a future time slot based on the combined RF exposure distribution, setting at least one transmission power limit for a first transmitter in the future time slot based on the at least one first maximum allowable power level, and setting at least one transmission power limit for a second transmitter in the future time slot based on the at least one second maximum allowable power level.

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for operating a wireless communication device pursuant to radio frequency (RF) exposure with antenna grouping. An example method of wireless communication by a user equipment generally includes accessing a stored backoff factor associated with an antenna group among a plurality of antenna groups. The method also includes transmitting, from at least one transmit antenna in the antenna group, a signal at a transmission power level based on the backoff factor in compliance with an RF exposure requirement.

Time-averaged radio frequency (RF) exposure per antenna group

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, an apparatus may determine a time-averaged power limit of a set of antennas. The apparatus may modify an antenna switching configuration based at least in part on the time-averaged power limit. According to certain aspects a wireless device includes transmitters, and a processor coupled to the transmitters. The processor is configured to determine a radio frequency (RF) exposure value at a peak location based on transmission power levels for the transmitters, determine a contribution of each one of the transmitters to the RF exposure value at the peak location, and reduce the transmission power level for each one of one or more of the transmitters based on the contributions of the transmitters to the RF exposure value at the peak location.

Reductions in transmit power based on spatial distributions of radio frequency exposure in multi-transmitter scenarios

In an aspect of the disclosure, a method, a computer-readable medium, and an apparatus are provided. In certain configurations, the apparatus may be a user equipment (UE). The apparatus may receive configuration information for UL and DL transmissions from another device such as a base station. The apparatus may determine a maximum duty cycle of the UL transmission based on the configuration information. Based on the determined UL maximum duty cycle, the apparatus may determine a transmit power limit for the UL transmission. In one aspect, the apparatus may determine the UL transmit power limit by dividing the power corresponding to a maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limit by the determined maximum UL duty cycle. The apparatus may leverage the forward knowledge of the UL duty cycle to transmit at a power level that complies with the MPE limit while avoiding the poor uplink range associated with static power back-off.
