A request to identify a person is received from a user. For example the user may say 'Find me the name of a person who sent me an email regarding Project X last week.' The request is to identify the person in order to establish an electronic communication session with the identified person. The request is parsed to identify one or more filtering criteria. One or more electronic record stores are determined based on the one or more filtering criteria. For example, specific devices on a network are identified. The one or more electronic record stores are searched using the one or more filtering criteria to create a filtered list of persons. The filtered list of persons is displayed on a first communication device in a simplified user interface. The simplified user interface dramatically reduces the time and steps necessary to identify the person and establish the communication session.

Simplified user interface for identifying people when making electronic communications

Recognizing a user's speech is a computationally demanding task. If a user calls a destination server, little may be known about the user or the user's speech profile. The user's source system (device and/or server) may have an extensive profile of the user. As provided herein, a source device may provide translated text and/or speech attributes to a destination server. As a benefit, the recognition algorithm may be well tuned to the user and provide the recognized content to the destination. Additionally, the destination may provide domain attributes to allow the source recognition engine to better recognize the spoken content.

A method, system and voice browser execute voice applications to perform a voice-based function. A document is retrieved and parsed to create a parse tree. Script code is created from the parse tree, thereby consuming part of the parse tree to create a reduced parse tree. The reduced parse tree is stored in a cache for subsequent execution to perform the voice-based function.

A speech recognizer performs speech recognition on a spoken name supplied by a user, producing a list of possible matches and corresponding confidence scores, by comparing a packetized voice stream of a spoken name to a plurality of stored phonemes that represent users' text names. If the top scoring match for a spoken name does not correctly identify the spoken name or if the spoken name's confidence score is below a first threshold, the user name is flagged to the system administrator as having a potential speech recognition problem. The results of the speech recognition are used to suggest names whose spelling may need to be adjusted to resolve the speech recognition problem. During production, a low threshold for rejecting speech recognition results can be adjusted downwards for names that produced low scores during testing. Heuristics are presented for re-testing only a subset of names when the set of names is changed.

An application compositor enables the creation a sequence of SIP and HTTP servlets that comprises a converged multi-protocol application. Applications are constructed based on rules that declaratively specify a multi-protocol sequence of servlets and the transitions between the servlets, minimizing programmer effort. The application compositor works with a servlet container within an application server to determine the sequence of servlets to be executed by the servlet container when running the application, and is called by the servlet container to perform transitions between servlets.

A method and apparatus for incorporating a third user into an instant message (IM) session. In one embodiment, an IM server receives a first IM from a first user directed toward a second user. The IM server makes a determination that the second user is not available to respond to the first IM. In response to the determination, the IM server identifies a third user to whom the first IM is to be forwarded, and automatically forwards the first IM to the third user. In another embodiment, the IM server receives a transfer request from the second user to transfer the IM session from the second user to the third user. The IM server automatically determines a subset portion of a plurality of IMs communicated between the first user and the second user, and provides the transfer request and the subset portion to the third user.

Methods and systems for incorporating a third user into an instant message session

Once an active video conference is set up and a user is viewing the active video conference at a video terminal, the video terminal looks for different events that indicate a change in focus of the user to or from the active video conference. For example, the user brings up another application and starts using the application or the user has minimized a window that is displaying the active video conference. The video terminal sends a change of focus message based on the event to a video conference bridge or another video terminal that is streaming the active video conference to the user. The video conference bridge/video terminal processes the message and changes video portion of the stream of the active video conference based on the message. The result is that there is improved use of bandwidth between the video terminal and the video conference bridge/video terminal.

A method and apparatus for accessing messages from a message server. Messages are stored on the message server in their current format without transcoding. When a client opens a session with the message server, a data transfer rate is determined for the client. In response to a message retrieve request, the bit rate of the message is compared to the data transfer rate, and if less than the data transfer rate, the message is downloaded to the user terminal without transcoding. If the bit rate is greater than the data transfer rate, then the message is transcoded to a lower bit rate according to a codec supported by the user. The codec may be selected from a set of codecs supported by the user terminal. The user is provided with the capability to override the system selected codec, for example, to pick a codec for secure encoding or encryption.

Method and apparatus for providing an interface for a messaging mailbox

A method and apparatus for increasing channel capacity in an Internet-based voice messaging system. Voice messages are stored in client mailboxes in the voice compression format they are received in a call answering session. During a message pickup session, the voice compression format of the retrieved message is compared to the voice compression formats or codecs supported by the user's terminal. If the voice compression format is not the same, re-negotiation is attempted, and if unsuccessful the voice message is transcoded prior to playback. If the voice compression format is the same, then the voice message is played back without transcoding. The voice message server also includes a voice prompt module which stores voice prompts in all the voice compression formats or codecs supported by the voice message server. The voice prompts are selected according to the supported voice compression format or codec and played back without the need for any transcoding.

A method, apparatus and data structure for managing data in a memory device. The memory device is divided into two volumes. The first volume is intended for storing relatively static data, i.e. data which does not change or is not rewritten frequently. The second volume is intended for storing dynamic data, i.e. data which is changed or rewritten frequently. Each of the volumes is divided into a number of blocks, for example erase blocks, with each block being divided into sectors. In the dynamic volume, each of the erase blocks has one sector allocated for storing metadata, and the remaining sectors in the erase block are available for storing data, other than metadata. In the static volume, each of erase blocks can store more than one sector of metadata, in addition to data other than metadata. The metadata may be stored in consecutive sectors in the erase blocks. According to another aspect, the data structure is suitable for flash disk memory devices and flash disk memory devices used for multimedia applications.

A system and a method for generating a speech recognition dictionary that can be used in a telephone system having speech recognition capabilities, in particular capabilities to effect a connection when the calling party utters the name of a subscriber (called party). The method generates transcriptions associated to respective vocabulary items in the speech recognition dictionary from audio greetings recorded by the telephone system subscribers. Normally such audio greetings are used in voice messaging applications. Typically, the greetings are played before allowing callers to leave messages in a voice mailbox of subscribers. An individual greeting is audio information that contains the name of the subscriber. This audio information is processed to generate a transcription associated to a vocabulary item in the speech recognition dictionary, representative of the subscriber name.
