Various embodiments are disclosed relating to techniques to transmit data rate control signals for multicarrier wireless systems. According to an example embodiment, a wireless apparatus may be adapted to transmit at least a first data rate control (DRC) value via an in-phase channel and at least a second DRC value via a Quadrature-phase channel. The first DRC value may be associated with a first forward link carrier and the second DRC value may be associated with a second forward link carrier. In this manner, DRC values may be transmitted over both the I and Q channels, for example.

Described is a method of constructing multi-user packets in a communication network utilizing packet-switching, wherein a plurality of user request service from the communication network. According to this method, priorities are allocated to each of the plurality of user. Of the plurality of user, those user are selected who indicate that multi-user packets are supportable. A group of user out of the selected user is formed, where group is defined in that all user who are member of the group allow at least one common transmission format. Finally, a multi-user packet is constructed utilizing one common transmission format.

Method and apparatus to support multi-user packets in a wireless communication system

The present invention concerns methods for efficiently supporting Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the Forward Packet Data Channel (F-PDCH) in CDMA 2000 1xEV-DV systems. Active speech in VoIP is encoded using, for example enhanced variable rate codec (EVRC), which produces 171, 80 and 16 bits per 20 ms of speech for Rate 1, Rate &#xbd; and Rate &#x215b;, respectively. However, about 60% of the time a user is inactive during a speech session, so an inordinate amount of system bandwidth is comprised of rate &#x215b; VoIP packets. In one embodiment of the present invention the apparatus of the present invention identifies the Rate &#x215b; voice frame packets and discards them. In another embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus of the present invention identifies the Rate &#x215b; voice frame packets and selects some of them for further transmission. In both embodiments the efficiency of channel utilization is increased since the amount of channel band width used to communicate relatively little information, e.g., gaps of silence, is decreased.

An approach is provided for adaptively adjusting a threshold relating to a loading condition of a communication link. A method and system for providing efficient transmission power control commands to a base station. In a third generation IS-95 CDMA network, for example, cdma2000, the forward pilot channel is used to estimate the received signal power level. In the presently preferred embodiment, a mobile station measures the received pilot channel power, on a forward link pilot channel. The loss experienced on the pilot channel is estimated as the difference between the pilot channel power transmitted at the base station and the pilot channel power received at the mobile station. The pilot power transmission power is typically fixed based upon the operating environment of the base station. The fixed pilot channel transmission power can be transmitted via a message from the base station. Based on the estimated channel loss, the received traffic power is calculated as the difference between the initial traffic channel transmission power, that is, the power when the mobile station is assigned a traffic channel, and the estimated loss added to any power control gain corrections that have occurred. The initial traffic channel transmission power can be a default value or can be assigned by the base station using signaling messages, e.g., a forward common control channel (or F-CCCH) message. Power control decisions are made based on the ratio of received traffic channel energy with an estimate of interference and noise on the channel. A &ldquo;power control decision&rdquo; is made by comparing the ratio with a predetermined threshold to determine if the power level should be raised or lowered.

Methods for controlling data rate allocations to data packet users transmitting packet data over a CDMA cellular communication network are defined which comprises the steps of: evaluating traffic channels and radio capacity allocated for packet data services within the network to determine an available resource for a packet data transmission; employing a rate control algorithm to determine a data rate allocation for the packet data transmission; and limiting the transmit power of a transmitter to provide the determined data rate allocation for the packet data transmission. The methods include a rate control algorithm which determines data rate allocation using a transmission power budget technique and a rate control algorithm which determines data rate allocation using a current system load technique.

Rate control techniques for efficient high speed data services

A method and apparatus is provided for the overlaid operation of two or more wireless communication systems where one of the two systems is a small-scale or indoor system and the other is a large-scale or outdoor system. The indoor system monitors the operation of the outdoor system and detects which part of the available radio resources are temporarily not in use or interference-free in the outdoor system. The indoor system dynamically selects an unused outdoor channel for indoor operation. The indoor radio traffic is divided into TDD time slots with the slots being used for monitoring the existing radio communication on other outdoor channels so that fast changes according to changing traffic and interference conditions are possible. Synchronization, timing and phase control may be added to assist in the maintenance of an error-free communication network.
