Partial discharge detection techniques are provided. In one aspect, a method of detecting partial discharge in an electrical power system having a power electronics converter is provided. A first current signal is captured in response to a first applied voltage. A second current signal is captured in response to a second applied voltage, the second applied voltage being different than the first applied voltage. The first current signal is set as a reference signal. A difference signal is determined based on the second current signal and the reference signal. A determination is made as to whether partial discharge is present based on the difference signal. The method may iterate, and for each iteration, the reference signal is refreshed on a rolling basis as a previously captured current signal measured in response to a previously applied voltage. The applied voltage is also stepped up or down for each iteration.

Noise tolerant electrical discharge detection

Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to systems and methods for detecting Partial Discharge (PD) associated with wide bandgap semiconductor-based electrical drive systems in real time. In one aspect, signals, including noise associated with drive switching and other background noises are detected using a sensing device. The signals are received by a real-time spectrum analyzer. The spectrum analyzer transforms the signals into the frequency domain and determines or registers the frequency domain profiles of the signals. The spectrum analyzer performs signal discrimination between at least one other signal included within the signals and switching noise based on their frequency domain profiles. Based on the discrimination analysis, the presence of a partial discharge signal may be detected. A physics-based signal discrimination approach can also be used for signal discrimination, for example utilizing pressure-dependency of characteristics of a PD signal.

Online and offline partial discharge detection for electrical drive systems

An electric winding assembly comprising a conductor core which includes at least a first end and a distal second end, an insulation layer overlying the conductor core, and a conductive shield layer overlying the insulation layer. The conductive shield layer further having a terminal end conductively connected with the conductive shield layer.

Method and system for electrically insulating portions of an electric machine

An electrical machine of a vehicle electrical propulsion system includes a stator, a rotor, and a stator winding all disposed within a housing thereof. The stator defines a central bore elongated along a longitudinal axis, and multiple slots circumferentially disposed around the central bore. The rotor is held within the central bore and rotates relative to the stator. The stator winding includes a core conductor, an insulation layer surrounding the core conductor, and a conductive shield layer surrounding the insulation layer. The stator winding extends through the slots of the stator. The stator winding includes an in-slot portion within the slots of the stator and an end-winding portion outside of the slots. The conductive shield layer surrounds the insulation layer along both the in-slot portion and the end-winding portion of the stator winding.

Electrical propulsion system with corona suppression on a vehicle

An insulative assembly includes an insulative mica-based carrier film and first and second resistive grading layers joined to opposite sides of the mica-based carrier film. The first resistive material layer is configured to engage one or more conductors and insulate the one or more conductors from at least one other conductor. A method for creating an insulative assembly for one or more conductors includes obtaining an insulative mica-based carrier film, depositing a first resistive grading layer on a first side of the mica-based carrier film, and depositing a second resistive grading layer on an opposite, second first side of the mica-based carrier film.

Insulation for conductors

A stator assembly of an electric machine includes a stator core having a slot extending between a first end and a second end, where the slot includes a first slot exit at the first end and a second slot exit at the second end. Also, the stator assembly includes a plurality of windings, where one of the plurality of windings is disposed in the slot and extends from the first slot exit to the second slot exit, and where the plurality of windings includes at least one conductor and an insulation disposed around the at least one conductor. Further, the stator assembly includes a dielectric plate coupled to one of the first slot exit and the second slot exit and configured to suppress surface discharges on windings present at one of the first slot exit and the second slot exit to which the dielectric plate is coupled.

System and method for suppressing surface discharges on conductive windings of an electric machine

A flange assembly for use with a SOFC system includes a first flange, a second flange, and a dielectric element coupled between the first flange and the second flange. The dielectric element includes an outer cylindrical surface and an inner cylindrical surface. The inner cylindrical surface defines a cylindrical region having a circumference. The inner cylindrical surface also defines a channel that extends radially about the circumference of the cylindrical region.

Flange assembly for use with a solid oxide fuel cell system

A film capacitor is presented. The film capacitor includes a thermally conductive support. The thermally conductive support includes a core including a first end and a second end. The thermally conductive support further includes a protrusion extending from at least one of the first end and the second end of the core, where at least one of the core and the protrusion includes a phase change material. Further, the film capacitor also includes a plurality of films disposed on at least a portion of the thermally conductive support, where the plurality of films includes a plurality of electrode films and a dielectric film. Further, the thermally conductive support for the film capacitor and a method of forming the film capacitor are also presented.

Film capacitor and the method of forming the same

A system and a method are presented. The system includes an electrically conducting material and an electrical insulation system. The electrical insulation system includes a layered insulation tape that has a first layer and a second layer. The first layer includes a mica paper and a binder resin in a range from about 5 wt % to about 12 wt % of the insulation tape. The second layer includes a composite of layered nanoparticles dispersed in a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) matrix. The second layer laminates the first layer. The method includes attaching the first layer and the second layer with or without the addition of further resin; using the layered insulation tape as a turn insulation and ground wall insulation for an electrically conducting material; and impregnating the system with a nanofiller-incorporated resin by a vacuum pressure impregnation method, to form an insulation system within the system.

A capacitor assembly is disclosed. The capacitor assembly includes a housing. The capacitor assembly further includes a plurality of capacitors disposed within the housing. Furthermore, the capacitor assembly includes a thermally conductive article disposed about at least a portion of a capacitor body of the capacitors, and in thermal contact with the capacitor body. Moreover, the capacitor assembly also includes a heat sink disposed within the housing and in thermal contact with at least a portion of the housing and the thermally conductive article such that the heat sink is configured to remove heat from the capacitor in a radial direction of the capacitor assembly. Further, a method of forming the capacitor assembly is also presented.

An electrical connector includes a first cable termination chamber configured to receive a first power cable having at least a first conductor sheathed at least in part by a first insulating layer and a first insulation screen layer. Also, the electrical connector includes a first non-linear resistive layer configured to be coupled to a portion of the first conductor unsheathed by at least the first insulation screen layer and configured to control a direct current electric field generated in the first cable termination chamber. In addition, the electrical connector includes a first deflector configured to be coupled to the first power cable and control an alternating current electric field generated in the first cable termination chamber.

System and method for sub-sea cable termination

An Organic Rankine Cycle system is combined with a fuel cell system, with the working fluid of the Organic Rankine Cycle system being integrated directly into the cooling system for the fuel cell. The waste heat from the fuel cell is therefore applied directly to preheat and evaporate the working fluid in the Organic Rankine Cycle system to thereby provide improved efficiencies in the system.

A variable nozzle system can comprise a gas inlet ring, an opposing gas outlet ring, an actuation ring, guides, and vanes circumferentially spaced about and disposed between the gas inlet ring and the gas outlet ring. The gas inlet ring, the gas outlet ring, and the vanes can form nozzles, the nozzles being variable by rotation of the vanes about a pivot axis. The plurality of guides can extend from the gas inlet ring, the gas outlet ring, or the actuation ring, and the vanes can be connected to the actuation ring, so that each vane can be rotated by rotation of the actuation ring and by sliding against a respective guide from the plurality of guides. The actuation ring can have a gear rack and can be rotated by rotatable engagement of the gear rack with a pinion attached to the end of a rotatable gear shaft.
