Method and apparatus relating to a wireless device supporting 3GPP 4G and 5G radio interfaces and also supporting non-3GPP access, i.e., WiFi, for selecting a security gateway of a first type e.g., ePDG or a security gateway of a second type, e.g., N3IWF for accessing to the core network of first type, e.g., EPC or of a second type e.g., SGC. As the access methods via ePDG and N3IWF are not the same, the wireless device has to determine based on information obtained by a function in the network and its capabilities whether to use an ePDG or an N3IWF for untrusted non-3GPP access. The wireless device may take into account in the selection whether it is connected to the Core network over 3GPP 4G or 5G radio access network. A corresponding apparatus claim is provided.

Security gateway selection in hybrid 4G and 5G networks

The present disclosure describes methods and apparatus for supporting QoS and media flow mapping over simultaneous connection for a user equipment (UE), when the simultaneous connections are established over heterogeneous systems having different QoS models, such as 3GPP LTE (4G) QoS model and 3GPP 5G QoS model. The 4G and 5G networks may share the user plane and/or share a policy server. In one aspect, methods for consolidating and distributing the QoS for the NGBR flow and bearer across simultaneous PDN connection over 4G and PDU session over 5G to the same data network (DN) or different DNs are provided. In another aspect, methods are provided for mapping one or more media flows of a multimedia session, such as an IMS session, over simultaneous 4G and 5G connections for a UE are provided, where the 4G connection and the 5G connection for the UE may or may not share the assigned IP address for the UE.

A decompressor, a compressor and methods in an Internet Protocol (IP) network for reporting cause of missing packets. A cause of unsuccessful reception or sending of a compressed packet addressed is reported to a compressor/decompressor node. The compressor/decompressor node decides or predicts if a decompression context associated with the decompressor is invalidated by analyzing the cause of the unsuccessful reception and, optionally, analyzing a re-initialization agreement between the compressor and the decompressor. In an optional embodiment of the present invention, the compressor/decompressor node use the decision or prediction to exchange information to reinitialize the decompression context associated with the decompressor. In a preferable embodiment of the present invention, the detection of the unsuccessful sending or reception is performed at a Medium Access (MAC) layer associated with the compressor/decompressor node.

Method and apparatus for increased internet protocol (IP) headers compression performance by reporting cause of missing packets

An Internet Protocol (IP) headers decompressor node, a method and an IP headers manager in an IP network for fast IP headers compression initialization is thereby provided. The invention teaches how to exchange IP packets between at least two nodes of the IP network for establishment of a session therebetween, to initialize, at a first one of the at least two nodes, a static portion of a decompression context prior to completion of the establishment of the session and to uncompress application related IP packets exchanged with a second of the at least two nodes. In an optional embodiment of the present invention, it is further taught how exchanging IP packets between at least two nodes of the IP network may further comprise extracting information from the IP packets at a first one of the at least two nodes of the IP network.

Method and apparatus for fast internet protocol headers compression initialization

A system and method for optimizing the use of packet-resources by releasing a hanging packet-data connection when a Mobile Station (MS) performs a power-down while involved in a dormant packet-data session. A Base Station Controller (BSC) sends a message to a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) indicating that the MS has powered down. The MSC determines that the packet-data session is dormant, and sends an instruction to the BSC in a class-0 connectionless transaction to release network resources associated with the packet-data session. The BSC then sends an instruction to a Packet Control Function (PCF) to tear down the associated resources, and the packet-data connection is released by a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) in response to the tearing down of the resources by the PCF.

Optimized packet-resource management

The invention relates a method for providing a level of service for a Mobile Terminal (MT) in a packet data telecommunications network. The further method receives at the MT from a proxy server a request message for requesting the quality of service for a session between the MT and the proxy server. The method generates, based on a proxy server IP address received during a registration of the MT at the proxy server, a token for correlating accounting information and inform the proxy server of the quality of service to be applied to packet data sent on to be sent during the session, wherein the token includes the proxy server IP address and a session identity parameter and responsive to the reception of the request from the IMS proxy server, sending a response message including the token to the proxy server.

Method for controlling the quality of service in an IP multimedia system

A method and Policy Decision Function node are provided for maintaining a multimedia session in an alive state for a mobile station following a release of a network attachment resulting from a handoff from a first Packet Data Node to a second Packet Data Node followed by a dormancy state of the mobile station. If both Packet Data Nodes are comprised into a same MultiMedia Domain, the Policy Decision Function informs an Application Function of the MultiMedia Domain that the multimedia session shall be maintained. Otherwise, if the two Packet Data Nodes are comprised into distinct MultiMedia Domains, a first Policy Decision Function, in addition to informing a first Application Function that the multimedia session shall be maintained, also fetches a context of the multimedia session. Further, the first Policy Decision Function transfers the context of the multimedia session to the first Packet Data Node, which in turn sends the context of the multimedia session to the second Packet Data Node. Subsequent to reactivation of the mobile station, a second Policy Decision Function transfers the context of the multimedia session from the second Packet Data Node to a second Application Function in a second MultiMedia Domain.

Seamless handoff for multimedia services

An authentication server (e.g., AAA server) is described herein which is located in a CDMA2000 network and used to authenticate a user terminal that is connected to a non-CDMA2000 network. The authentication server receives an access request for authenticating the user terminal connected to the non-CDMA2000 network. Then, it obtains a root secret key shared between the user terminal and the CDMA2000 network and generates a GSM or UMTS-like authentication vector which is used to authenticate the user terminal according to a GSM or UMTS-like authentication method. The access of the terminal to the non-CDMA2000 network is granted upon successful authentication. According to embodiments of the invention, the non-CDMA2000 network can be a WLAN network, and the authentication methods used can be EAP SIP or EAP AKA. The present invention allows one to use authentication servers that were originally intended for WLAN-3GPP interworking scenarios also in WLAN-CDMA2000 network interworking.

GSM-like and UMTS-like authentication in a CDMA2000 network environment

A method and a packet data network for providing broadcast/multicast services (BCMCS) to a mobile terminal (MT). The method receives at a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server from the MT, for requesting an IP address of a primary BCMCS controller that serves the packet data network. The method retrieves the IP address of the primary BCMCS controller and responds to the MT with a response message from the DHCP server to the MT, the response message includes the IP address of the primary BCMCS controller. Next, the MT uses the IP address of the primary BCMCS controller and sends a Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) request message from the MT to the primary BCMCS controller for requesting BCMCS services, the HTTP request message including a location information and an access type indicator of the MT. Afterwards, a list of available BCMCS programs is provided to the MT.

Method for discovering a broadcast multicast services (BCMCS) controller in a packet data network

A method and a decompressor node in Internet Protocol (IP) network for fast change of IP Headers Compression (HC) mechanism are provided. A Mobile Station (MS) connected to a serving system uses a first IP HC mechanism therewith. Upon initiating handoff of the MS from the serving system to a target system, a second IP HC mechanism is chosen to be used with the target system. The second IP HC mechanism is initialized using information received at the target system from the serving system. In a preferred embodiment, the received information is a decompression context and the initialization of the second IP HC mechanism consists of translating the decompression context from the first IP HC mechanism to the second IP HC mechanism.

Method and apparatus for fast change of internet protocol headers compression mechanism

In an IP-based Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000 packet-data cellular telecommunications network, a method and system for handing over a dormant Mobile Node (MN) to a target packet zone. According to the invention, first the dormant MN sends an origination request message to the target Base Station Controller and Packet Control Function (BSC/PCF), which further sends a registration request comprising an indication that the MN is dormant to a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN). The PDSN replies to the BSC/PCF with a registration reply message for requesting the establishment of a traffic channel for the MN, and for indicating that it has data packets ready to be sent to the MN, such as for example Link Control Protocol (LCP) data packets for use in the negotiation of a new Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection. The registration reply message comprises an indication such as for example a Data ready to Sent (DRS) parameter set to 1. The BSC/PCF establishes the traffic channel and forwards the data packets to the MN. Following the receipt of the registration reply in the BSC/PCF, the paging of the MN is avoided.

Mobile IP mobility management at dormant hand-over in CDMA IP-based cellular packet-data network

A system, method and node for supporting PDSN load balancing in a CDMA2000 network. A mobile node (MN) sends an origination message to a BSC/PCF that sends a registration request indicating that it supports load balancing according to the invention to the manager part of a PDSN that selects an agent to take care of the connection and redirects the request to it. The agent then validates the request and sends a reply to the BSC/PCF indicating that the initial request has been redirected. The reply also comprises the IP address of the agent. The BSC/PCF then sets up an A10 connection with the agent, and the MN and the agent negotiate a PPP session. There is further a method of setting up a connection between two entities, via a third entity.
