A material for use as an electrode, and particularly the anode (20) of an electrochemical device, such as an electrochemical capacitor device (10). The material is a multicomponent alloy material, including a host matrix material consisting of antimony, and at least one modifier element selected from the group consisting of bismuth, nickel, cadmium, zinc, silver, manganese, lead, lithium, and combinations thereof.

Electrode materials and electrochemical devices using same

An electronic device (220) includes a component (105), such as a microprocessor, that generates heat and an electrochemical capacitor (200) used for thermal management. The electrochemical capacitor (200) has a first region, preferably the perimeter region, including electroactive material (160) and an electrolyte (165) and also has a second region, preferably the inner region, including heat sink material (170). When the component (105) and the electrochemical capacitor (200) are mounted within the device (220), the heat sink material (170) of the capacitor (200) is aligned with the component (105).

Electrochemical capacitor used for thermal management

An electrochemical cell, particularly an electrochemical capacitor device (30) includes first and second electrodes (24) and (28) having an electrolyte (26) disposed therebetween. At least one of the electrodes (24) is fabricated on a substrate (12) and includes a multilayer composite electrode active material disposed thereon. The multilayer composite electrode includes first and second layer (16) and (22), in which the ratios of electroactive materials therein is varied so as to promote good adherence to the electrode substrate as well as excellent electrochemical performance.

Composite multilayer electrodes for electrochemical cells

A hybrid electrode for a high power, high energy, electrical storage device contains both a high-energy electrode material (42) and a high-rate electrode material (44). The two materials are deposited on a current collector (40), and the electrode is used to make an energy storage device that exhibits both the high-rate capability of a capacitor and the high energy capability of a battery. The two materials can be co-deposited on the current collector in a variety of ways, either in superimposed layers, adjacent layers, intermixed with each other or one material coating the other to form a mixture that is then deposited on the current collector.

High power, high energy, hybrid electrode and electrical energy storage

An electrochemical, bismuth containing charge storage material and electrochemical cells (10) having an electrode (20) comprising the material. The charge storage material has the composition: Bi.sub.x X.sub.y M.sub.z where Bi is bismuth, M and X are modifiers and x, y, and z represent the relative proportion of each component.

Bismuth based electrodes for electrochemical cells

A method of enforcing a regular manganese dioxide cathode to become gradually and substantially rechargeable is described, where the cathode capacity is increased towards the theoretical capacity of the cathode. The method involves mixing 20-51 wt % MnO.sub.2, 5-25 wt % metallic bismuth and 30-70 wt % graphite powder to form a homogenous mixture, subjecting the mixture to a pressing force to form an electrode and subjecting the electrode to successive discharge/charge cycles at a rate where the cathode capacity becomes greater than 75% of the theoretical capacity after 4-7 cycles. The method provides for a simple and inexpensive way of forming a rechargeable manganese dioxide cathode without complex chemical synthesis.

Rechargeable manganese dioxide cathode

An electrode for an energy storage device uses a protonated polymer that is imbedded with an electroactive metal and coated onto activated carbon. Protonated poly(4-vinylpyridine) is coated onto particles of activated carbon that have high surface area, and the coating is then imbedded with a metal that exhibits electroactive behavior. In one embodiment, ruthenium is plated onto the poly(4-vinylpyridine) to create the electrode. Optionally, a coating of an ionically conductive negatively charged polymer is applied over the ruthenium-imbedded coating. The improved electrode is used to make a capacitor.

Carbon electrodes and energy storage device made thereof

An electrochemical cell is made with two asymmetric electrodes and a solid polymer electrolyte. The anode is made from materials such metal hydrides, metals, metal hydroxides or metal oxides. The cathode is made from metal hydrides, metals, metal hydroxides or metal oxides. A solid polymer electrolyte is in intimate contact with and situated between the anode and the cathode. The solid polymer electrolyte is made from a polymeric binder such as polyethylene oxide, polyvinylalcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylamide, poly(vinylpyrrolidone), poly(2-vinylpyridine), poly(4-vinylpyridine) and polyethyleneimine. The polymeric binder has H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 or H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 dispersed within it.

Electrochemical cell having solid polymer electrolyte and asymmetric

An electrochemical charge storage device (20) having a voltage discharge profile which is constant for a substantial period of the discharge cycle, which then drops off sharply to full discharge, in a manner more often associated with a battery discharge profile. The electrochemical charge storage device is further characterized by a discharge rate in excess of at least 100 C., and as much as 7000 C. Accordingly, the electrochemical charge storage device is characterized by a battery discharge voltage profile which occurs at substantially capacitor discharge rates.

Electrochemical charge storage device having constant voltage discharge

An electrochemical charge storage device (60) having two asymmetric inorganic electrodes (30, 36) is provided. The device may be fabricated using a bipolar plate which acts as both the conductor, and as the substrate upon which the active electrodes are formed. The bipolar plate may further be adapted to act as one of the active electrodes by activating a portion of the bipolar plate material.

Electrochemical capacitor and method of making same

A material for use as an electrode, and particularly the cathode (30) of an electrochemical device, such as a pseudocapacitive device (10). The material is a substantially amorphous material having a host matrix material selected from the group of cobalt, nickel, iron, and combinations, and a modifier element or elements selected from the group of boron, phosphorous, carbon, silicon, aluminum, manganese, copper, chromium, vanadium, titanium, molybdenum, zirconium, tungsten, and combinations thereof.

Amorphous cobalt alloy electrodes for aqueous electrochemical devices

An electrolyte system for use in an electrochemical cell such as a battery or capacitor, and which includes an aqueous electrolyte and a modifier species. The modifier should be adapted to act as a surfactant, as well as reduce oxidation of the electrode materials in the electrochemical cell. The aqueous electrolyte may be, for example, KOH, and the modifier species may be a porphine or porphine derivatives.

Modified electrolyte for electrochemical cells and cells using same

An electrochemical cell is made with two asymmetric electrodes and a solid polymer electrolyte. The anode is made from materials such metal hydrides, metals, metal hydroxides or metal oxides. The cathode is made from metal hydrides, metals, metal hydroxides or metal oxides. A solid polymer electrolyte is in intimate contact with and situated between the anode and the cathode. The solid polymer electrolyte is made from a polymeric binder such as polyethylene oxide, polyvinylalcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polyacrylamide, poly(vinylpyrrolidone), poly(2-vinylpyridine), poly(4-vinylpyridine) and polyethyleneimine. The polymeric binder has H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 or H3PO4 dispersed within it.

An electrode for an energy storage device is made from an activated carbon support. The activated carbon has adsorbed onto it a protonated polymer, which has a polyoxometalate absorbed into the polymer. Preferably, the protonated polymer is poly(4-vinylpyridine), and the polyoxometalate is isopolymolybdate. An energy storage device, such as a capacitor, can be made from the modified carbon electrode. A pair of the coated carbon electrodes (13) are placed in contact with an electrolyte to form the device.
