A method for monitoring a target in a medical display in a medical imaging apparatus includes receiving echo signals from an area of interest of a patient, extracting raw data from the received echo signals, processing the extracted raw data to display a dual mode image on the medical display, and setting a location and displaying a first marker/cursor in a first image of the dual mode image. In addition, the method further includes determining a corresponding location of the marker/cursor in a second image of the dual mode image, and displaying a second marker/cursor in the second image of the dual mode image at the corresponding location simultaneously with the displaying of the first marker/cursor in the first image.

Method and apparatus for obtaining and/or analyzing anatomical images

A non-linear response may be measured by transmitting a first pulse at an amplitude and transmit frequency, using an aperture having N elements. A first response is measured at a sub-harmonic frequency based on the transmit frequency. At least second and third pulses are transmitted at the amplitude and transmit frequency. At least second and third responses are measured at the sub-harmonic frequency. The second and third pulses have the same phase with respect to each other and use first and second sub-apertures that have different ones of the N elements. A sum of the elements within the first and second sub-apertures is equal to N. Alternatively, at least two pulses having the same aperture and different amplitudes may be transmitted, and the responses measured at the sub-harmonic frequency. The responses are combined to suppress linear echoes and determine a non-linear response.

A subset of Doppler data is determined from the plurality of spectral lines of Doppler data. The noise and signal characteristics are compared, and a system parameter is adjusted based on a result of the comparing step.

Automatic annotation filler system and method for use in ultrasound imaging

A system for automatically adjusting color gain of an ultrasound image. Image data passes through a wall filter and is processed into a time-gain compensation curve. Values of the time-gain compensation curve are multiplied with corresponding image data values to compensate for attenuation of image data values with increasing depth in a patient. The values used to generate the time-gain compensation curve may be averaged to reduce localized gain variations and produce an image with smoother intensity transitions. To reduce the effect of a time-gain compensation curve on overall system gain, values of the time-gain compensation curve may be scaled to produce equalized values for the time-gain compensation curve. Values of the time-gain compensation curve may be used to adjust front end gain of an ultrasound system to bring the front end gain within a few decibels of noise floor.

Automatic color gain adjustments

An ultrasound system is disclosed that includes a method and apparatus to automatically adjust certain parameters that affect visualization of a Doppler spectral image. The ultrasound system acquires spectral lines of Doppler data generated by the ultrasound system. A data processor within the ultrasound system determines the presence of aliasing and estimates noise levels from the spectral lines of Doppler data. The data processor then automatically adjusts system parameters such as pulse repetition frequency (PRF), baseline shift, and spectrum orientation in response to aliasing and noise levels. The data processor of the ultrasound system also determines positive and negative signal boundaries for each spectral line of Doppler data and a display architecture processes the signal boundary data to display a spectral trace corresponding to the edges of the spectral lines.

Method and apparatus for automatic control of spectral doppler imaging

An ultrasound transmitter generates ultrasound signals at an adjustable pulse repetition rate. A Doppler unit generates Doppler signals from ultrasound backscattered signals and stores them in a memory. A logic unit performs an algorithm which automatically adjusts the polarity and position of the velocity scale of a display and automatically adjusts the pule repetition rate of the transmitter based on analysis of the signals.

Method and apparatus for automatically maintaining the range gate inside a moving blood vessel during ultrasound imaging. The range gate can be maintained at the vessel center, or at a certain distance from one of the vessel boundaries, or at a certain ratio of the respective distances from the two boundaries. The user first places the range gate on the blood flow being examined. An algorithm processes each successive image frame and automatically updates the information about vessel boundary positions and the vessel orientation angle in the vicinity of the range gate. If the range gate position relative to the vessel boundaries is different than that in the previous frame by more than a predetermined amount, the position of the range gate graphic and the orientation of the vessel slope cursor (and the Doppler angle) are automatically adjusted to the new values.

Method and apparatus for automatic vessel tracking in ultrasound imaging

A method and an apparatus for automatically maintaining the Doppler sample gate position at a preselected vessel position in B-mode or color flow images during tissue or probe motion. The sample gate is locked onto the selected vessel automatically when the vessel position has changed. Optionally, the vessel slope cursor is automatically updated when the vessel position has changed. The method employs pattern matching of images from successive frames to determine how much a vessel in the image frame has been translated and rotated from one frame to the next. Preferably, either a cross-correlation method is applied to the imaging data in the spatial domain to determine the relative object translation and/or rotation between image frames, or a matched filtering method is applied to the imaging data in the frequency (i.e., Fourier) domain to determine the relative object translation and/or rotation between image frames.

Method and apparatus for locking sample volume onto moving vessel in pulsed doppler ultrasound imaging

A method and an apparatus for automatically initializing and adjusting the Doppler sample gate position and size settings based on actual vessel image data. A vessel segment search method employs an object search technique based solely on geometric and morphological information in a binarized vessel image obtained from either B-mode or color flow image data. The morphologically best or nearest vessel segment within a target search region in the two-dimensional image is found. The sample gate is placed at or near the center of the targeted vessel segment. The sample gate size is adjusted in relation to the vessel size. Then the best available steering angle that minimizes the Doppler angle is selected.

Method and apparatus for automatic setting of sample gate in pulsed doppler ultrasound imaging

A Doppler unit generates a Doppler signal from ultrasound backscattered signals. A logic unit performs a Fourier transform and compresses the resulting signals according to a compression curve determined in part by the noise level in the system. The peak values of the compressed signals also may be used to adjust the video gray mapping of the compressed signals in order to improve the appearance of a Doppler image on a display.

Doppler ultrasound automatic spectrum optimization

A method for automatic Doppler angle estimation based on the B-mode and color flow (if available) image. The method uses an algorithm for automatic vessel slope measurement which first finds an optimal initial point within the sample volume or range gate, and then searches for the most reliable pixel points (near or far walls) based on a combination of intensity-only and intensity-difference thresholds, before performing a slope estimation. B-mode intensity data and, optionally, color flow velocity or power data (before gray/color mapping) are used. The algorithm may also be applied to methods for automatic tracking of vessel diameter and flow rate calculations, although the primary objective is to achieve automatic Doppler angle estimation in an ultrasound scanner.
