An approach for characterizing an optical near field transducer (NFT) involves providing excitation radiation to the NFT. The NFT emits photoluminescent radiation in response to the excitation radiation. The output radiation from the NFT is filtered so that a portion of the photoluminescent radiation emitted by the NFT passes through the filter and the excitation radiation is substantially blocked. A detector detects the portion of photoluminescent radiation and outputs an electrical signal in response to detection of the portion of photoluminescent radiation.

Characterization of near field transducers

An apparatus includes a waveguide, a laser diode positioned adjacent to the waveguide and having an active region producing light in a plane substantially parallel to a plane of the waveguide, a first grating positioned to couple light out of the laser diode and to direct the light toward the waveguide, a reflective layer positioned adjacent to a side of the first grating opposite to the waveguide, and a second grating having the same period as the first grating and positioned to couple light into the waveguide. Grating assisted surface emitter laser coupling for heat assisted magnetic recording

A device includes a body, a waveguide, and a near field transducer (NFT). The body has opposed first and second surfaces. The waveguide is adapted to receive light and convey the light to a distal end of the waveguide. The NFT is disposed proximate the distal end, and it has an output end proximate the first surface of the body. The device further includes a surface-emitting distributed feedback (SE-DFB) laser that is mounted on and attached to the body and positioned to inject laser light into the waveguide. The device may be a recording head, and the laser, the waveguide, and the NFT may cooperate to provide electromagnetic heating to a substrate for heat assisted magnetic recording.

An apparatus includes a slider including an air bearing surface and a waveguide configured to receive light from a light source, a sensor positioned to receive a portion of light emitted by the light source prior to the light exiting the slider at the air bearing surface, and a controller controlling the light source power in response to a characteristic of the sensor.
