Aspects of the disclosure are directed to forming a three-dimensional (3D) structure by depositing an alloy composition on a target, and solidifying portions of the alloy composition to form the 3D structure. The solidifying includes producing a martensitic structure by destabilizing a ferrite phase of the alloy composition while solidifying the alloy composition.

Alloy composition, method and apparatus therefor

Aspects of the disclosure are directed to metal-based materials, their manufacture and their use. Certain embodiments involve providing powder in a metal-based foil/shell, and forming a tube from the foil/shell with the powder therein. The tube thus has a metal-based foil shell filled with the powder. Metal wire may be formed by rolling the tube filled with the powder and reducing the diameter of the tube. Certain embodiments are directed to the structure of such a tube prior to wire formation, and other embodiments are directed to the metal wire itself.

Powder core-shell structures and methods therefor

Aspects of the disclosure are directed to methods and/or apparatuses involving the formation of pore-free or nearly pore-free liquid droplets. As may be implemented in accordance with one or more embodiments, liquid droplets including metal are formed having pores within the liquid droplets. This may involve, for example, atomizing liquid metal with a gas and forming the droplets having pores. The pores are then driven out of the liquid droplets by heating the liquid droplets from a first state in which an outer surface of the droplets has a lower temperature than an inner region thereof, to a second state in which the outer surface has a higher temperature than the inner region.

Metallic powders and methods therefor

Aspects of the disclosure are directed to powder spreading and an apparatus therefor. As may be implemented in accordance with one or more embodiments, an apparatus having a flexible core and a shell on a surface of the core is used to displace powder in a powder bed. The shell has a low coefficient of friction, for example on the order of 0.10, and may operate to conduct static electricity away from the powder. The shell may be engaged with the powder to displace the powder and form a uniform powder layer having a planer upper surface, as the core is advanced across the powder bed.

Powder spreader

Aspects of the disclosure are directed to additively manufacturing a three-dimensional structure. As may be implemented in accordance with one or more embodiments, a plurality of stacked layers are deposited, and for one or more respective layers of the plurality of stacked layers, pores are formed within the layer by applying pulsed energy to the layer. The pulsed energy is used to create a space sealed within the layer and having an inner surface defined by material of the layer.

Additive manufacturing with sealed pores

A process for manufacturing metal-ceramic composite material powder comprising ball milling metal powder and ceramic nanoparticles to yield a metal-ceramic composite powder comprising ceramic nanoparticles embedded in a metal matrix powder particles; wherein the ball milling is performed using a ceramic milling media and a milling vessel having a ceramic interior surface. Metal matrix nanocomposite powders comprising ceramic nanoparticles imbedded in metal matrix powder particles; wherein the metal matrix powder particles have a spherical shape; wherein there is uniform distribution the ceramic nanoparticles; wherein the nanocomposite powders have good flowability.

Metal-ceramic composite powders

Solid immiscible alloys and methods for making the solid immiscible alloys are provided. The microstructure of the immiscible alloys is characterized by a minority phase comprising a plurality of particles of an inorganic material dispersed in a majority phase comprising a continuous matrix of another inorganic material. The methods utilize nanoparticles to control both the collisional growth and the diffusional growth of the minority phase particles in the matrix during the formation of the alloy microstructure.

Nanoparticle-stabilized immiscible alloys

A manufacturing method includes: 1) forming a melt including one or more metals; 2) introducing nanostructures into the melt at an initial volume fraction of the nanostructures; and 3) at least partially evaporating one or more metals from the melt so as to form a metal matrix nanocomposite including the nanostructures dispersed therein at a higher volume fraction than the initial volume fraction.

Evaporation-based method for manufacturing and recycling of metal matrix nanocomposites

Nanomaterials are incorporated within a material, such as within a metal-based material. As may be implemented in accordance with various embodiments, nanomaterials are introduced to a metal-based material in a liquid state, and the metal-based material and nanomaterials are cooled from the liquid state to a viscous state. The metal-based material is stirred in the viscous state to disperse the nanomaterials therein, and the metal-based material is used in the viscous state to maintain dispersion of the nanomaterials as the metal-based material cools.
