A system for harvesting energy from the operation of a downhole jar is disclosed. The system converts the kinetic energy associated with the operation of the jar to electrical energy by associating the relative movement between a magnet and a coil to the relative movement between a movable member and a stationary member in the jar. Electrical energy is generated in the coil as a result of the relative motion between the magnets and the coil. This electrical energy may be stored in an electrical energy storage subsystem and provided to a downhole tool for use in the wellbore. The downhole tool may be used to power other tools, to take measurements, to communicate with other devices, to actuate other devices, and to otherwise control such other devices.

A method of initiating a process in a downhole tool includes connecting a downhole tool to an initiator device that contains wires capable of creating a loopback and/or loaded condition when a closed connection is made. The initiator device is further capable of indicating successful initiation.

A downhole temperature logging method includes deploying a temperature logging device into a borehole, the temperature logging device having a mechanical drive and at least one shape memory alloy (SMA) unit. The method also includes deforming the SMA unit in response to a temperature or temperature range, wherein the deforming causes marks to a medium. The method also includes retrieving the medium and analyzing the marks.

Methods and systems for downhole temperature logging

An apparatus includes a power supply for producing power. The apparatus further includes a first processor powered by the power supply. The apparatus further includes a first time-storage circuit coupled to the first processor. The first processor periodically reads a first-real-time-clock time from a first real-time clock and stores the first-real-time-clock time in the first time-storage circuit. The apparatus further includes a first power-monitoring circuit coupled to the first processor. The first power-monitoring circuit stores energy when a first power-being-monitored is producing power and dissipates energy at a first predictable rate when the first power-being-monitored is not producing power. The first processor is programmed to, upon recovery from a reset, read from the first power-monitoring circuit the energy stored by the first power-monitoring circuit. The first processor is further programmed to determine from the first stored energy reading a first power-out length of time that the first power-being-monitored was not producing power. The first processor is further programmed to determine that the first power-out length of time is less than a first threshold length of time. The first processor is further programmed to set a first processor time to the first-real-time-clock time stored in the first time-storage circuit plus the first power-out length of time.
