A stable, multiphase liquid isotropic cleansing composition is described that contains high levels of Petrolatum and shows a substantial decrease in reflectance compared with isotropic cleansing compositions containing other oils and liquid crystalline compositions with similar levels of oils. The inventive composition has a total of less than 2% by wt. of other oils such as glyceride, mineral and silicone oils, or blends thereof.

A liquid cleansing composition is provided which includes from 5 to 25% by weight of a fatty acids mixture and from 30 to 90% by weight of water, wherein the fatty acids mixture is present in a weight amount greater than a total of all surfactants other than soap present in the composition. Further, the fatty acids mixture is 70-95% of lauric and myristic fatty acids in a weight ratio from 9:1 to 1:2, and 5-30% C-Cfatty acid, all by weight of the fatty acids mixture. Still further, 60-90 mole % of the fatty acids mixture is neutralized into soap.

The key is use of 10% to 60% glycerin and/or sorbitol which has been found, quite unpredictably, to stabilize compositions containing products of such high fatty acid and/or fatty acid soap content.

The invention provides process for making wet skin treatment compositions for use during bathing. The compositions are activated by water and retained efficiently on skin. The invention provides liquid cleanser compositions which contains fatty acyl isethionate surfactant products having at least 10 wt % free fatty acid and/or fatty acid salt used as the primary surfactant at a level at least 60 wt % of total fatty acyl isethionate and synthetic cosurfactants in the liquid composition. The key is to insure a specific combination of surfactant crystal modifiers so that the fatty acyl isethionate-containing liquid composition will be stable at low and high temperatures.
