Methods and compositions are described whereby poorly water-soluble beneficial agents such as vitamins and co-factors are formulated into self-emulsifying formulas (SEF) and optionally sorbing the SEF into pores of porous solid particulates, or preparing supersaturated solutions (SSS) and sorbing the SSS into pores of porous solid particulates. These formulations are useful as dosage forms with oral availability.

Stabilized solubility-enhanced formulations for oral delivery

The present invention provides a controlled-release composition which provides a therapeutically effective plasma concentration of N-acetylcysteine over prolonged period of time. The present invention also includes the use of the controlled-release composition, either alone or in combination with at least one additional active agent, for reduction of vascular inflammation marker and treatment of diseases, conditions, and/or symptoms associated with systemic and/or vascular inflammation in a patient. Furthermore, the present invention provides a process of making granules comprising N-acetylcysteine, or a salt, solvate, prodrug, and/or analog thereof.

Controlled release of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) for reduction of systemic and/or vascular inflammation

The present invention provides orodispersable tablets and methods of using the same. The tablets and methods are useful, for example, for reducing first pass metabolism of orally administered active agents, enhancing bioavailability of active agents, and/or reducing the time it takes for an active agent to achieve maximal effect in a subject. The tablets, when taken orally, disintegrate or dissolve rapidly such that active agent included in the tablets is absorbed in the buccal cavity. The invention further provides methods of manufacturing any of the tablets disclosed herein and containers that include any of the tablets disclosed herein.

Fast onset orodispersable tablets

A dosage form comprising a gelatin capsule formed with a composite wall and containing a liquid, active agent formulation where the wall comprises a barrier layer formed over the external surface of the gelatin capsule, an expandable layer formed over the barrier layer and a semipermeable layer formed over the expandable layer is described. The dosage forms and methods provide for the conversion of standard gelatin, liquid formulation capsules into controlled, release dosage forms that permit the controlled release of the active agent into the environment of use over time.

Conversion of liquid filled gelatin capsules into controlled release systems by multiple coatings

Optical fibre filters

A dispersion compensating module, mode converter, coupler and dispersion compensated optical fiber therein. The dispersion compensating fiber has a plurality of core segments, the refractive index profile being selected to exhibit properties such that an LP mode at 1550 nm may be propagated a distance (generally 0.5-3.0 km), upon conversion to LP , to compensate for dispersion of a length of transmission waveguide preferably greater than 25 km propagating in an LP mode. In another embodiment, the dispersion compensating module has a mode converter having a reflective fiber grating for converting a first to a second mode interconnected to a dispersion compensated fiber propagating in the second mode. The mode converter has a coupler adapted to operatively couple light propagating in a first mode from a first fiber into a second, and a reflective fiber grating operatively coupled to the second fiber; the grating being capable of converting light from the first into the second mode. According to another embodiment, an optical fiber coupler is provided having a first fiber with a first propagation constant in a first mode, and a second fiber within the coupler having a second propagation constant, the second fiber including a necked-down portion which is formed prior to fusion of the fibers, the necked-down portion being formed such that the local propagation constant of the second fiber substantially matches the first propagation constant thereby enhancing first mode coupling.

Dispersion compensating module and mode converter, coupler and dispersion compensating optical waveguide therein

An optical fibre has a cladding layer surrounding a core, the cladding layer comprising at least a first, relatively inner generally cylindrical region, a third, relatively outer generally cylindrical region, and a second region disposed between the first and third regions, the second region having a higher refractive index than the first and third regions; and the peak difference in refractive index between the first cladding region and the core being less than about 0.0030.

Disclosed is a fiber optic filter that includes a central core, a ring core concentric with the central core, an inner cladding region of refractive index n between the central and ring cores, and a cladding layer of refractive index n surrounding the ring core. At least a portion of the fiber optic filter fiber is wound around a reel to subject it to a continuous curvature, the radius of which determines the amplitude of the attenuation. Such fibers are useful in fiber amplifiers in which the central core contains active dopant ions.

Distributed resonant ring fiber filter

An optical waveguiding fiber has a photosensitive core and a cladding that includes a photosensitive inner cladding region adjacent the core and an outer cladding region. The inner cladding region and the outer cladding region have substantially equal indices of refraction. The photosensitivity of the inner cladding region is sufficient to cause a modulation of the index of refraction of the inner cladding when exposed to ultraviolet light. In another aspect of the invention, the optical fiber includes a grating in the core, which extends radially into the inner cladding region. The core and the inner cladding region of the optical fiber are doped with concentrations of Ge and B sufficient to impart photosensitivity to the inner cladding region, and to result in an index of refraction in the inner cladding region substantially equal to the index of refraction of the outer cladding region.
