An apparatus comprising a processor configured to determine whether to apply an intra smoothing filter for a prediction unit (PU) based on a lookup table (LUT), wherein the LUT comprises data indicating the intra smoothing filter should not be applied for any PU with a block size of 8&#xd7;8 pixels and associated with directional prediction mode. The disclosure also includes a method comprising generating reference samples, determining a size of a PU block, and selecting the reference samples based on PU block size, wherein filtered reference samples are not selected for PU blocks with a size of 8&#xd7;8 pixels and associated with directional prediction mode.

Simplification of mode dependent intra smoothing

A video codec comprising a processor configured to generate a prediction block for a chroma block, wherein the prediction block comprises a predicted chroma sample, wherein the predicted chroma sample is based on a filtered reconstructed luma sample located in a corresponding reconstructed luma block, a plurality of downsampled filtered reconstructed luma samples located in positions neighboring the corresponding reconstructed luma block, and a plurality of downsampled chroma samples located in positions neighboring the chroma block.

Reference pixel reduction for intra LM prediction

Techniques and tools are described for scalable video coding and decoding. For example, a video encoder and decoder perform adaptive update operations in lifting-based motion-compensated temporal filtering and inverse motion-compensated temporal filtering, respectively. The encoder, in a prediction stage, computes a motion-compensated prediction for an odd image and computes a high-pass image as the difference between the odd image and the prediction. For an update stage, the encoder performs motion compensation on the high-pass image (and potentially another high-pass image) to compute a motion-compensated update. Based upon perceptual criteria, the encoder adaptively combines the update with an even image to form a low-pass image. The decoder, for an update stage, performs motion compensation on one or more high-pass images to compute a motion-compensated update. Based upon perceptual criteria, the encoder adaptively combines the update with a low-pass image to reconstruct an even frame.
