In one aspect, a fuel cell power system is provided. The fuel cell power system includes a ring bus, a plurality of bidirectional uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), a plurality of direct current (DC) fuel cell modules, and a plurality of bidirectional direct current to alternating current (DC-AC) power converters. Each of the plurality of UPSs is electrically coupled to at least one battery, an AC utility feed, a load, and via a choke, the ring bus. Each of the plurality of DC fuel cell modules includes one or more fuel cells coupled to a hydrogen storage. Each of the plurality of bidirectional DC-AC power converters is electrically coupled to a corresponding one of the plurality of DC fuel cell modules and a corresponding one of the plurality of bidirectional UPSs at the AC utility feed.

Fuel cell powered ring bus architectures

A system includes: a ring bus; a plurality of static uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), each static UPS of the plurality of static UPSs including: at least one battery; an input that is electrically connected to a first external electrical power source; and an output that is electrically connected to a load, and, via a first corresponding choke, to the ring bus; at least one fuel-cell interface converter (FIC) that converts direct current (DC) electrical power to alternating current (AC) electrical power, each FIC of the at least one FIC being electrically connected to the ring bus via a second corresponding choke; and a fuel cell module corresponding to and electrically connected to each FIC, the fuel cell module including a fuel cell.

Method and control to integrate fuel cells in datacenters with ring-bus architecture

In one aspect, a hybrid circuit protection device for current-limiting a fault current between a source and a load during a fault is provided. The hybrid circuit protection device includes an input configured to couple to the source, an output configured to couple to the load, a return configured to couple the source to the load, a main switch configured to selectively couple the input to the output, a switching network coupled in parallel with the main switch, and a controller. The controller is configured to determine that the main switch has opened in response to the fault current, where the fault current has an initial value, and activate the switching network to current-limit the fault current to less than the initial value during the fault.

Hybrid circuit breakers

According to one aspect of the present disclosure, an energy storage system includes one or more power sources, one or more energy storage components, and one or more solid state circuit breakers disposed between the one or more power sources and the one or more energy storage components such that electrical power is exchanged between the one or more power sources to the one or more energy storage components through the one or more solid state circuit breakers. The energy storage system also includes a controller configured to operate the one or more solid state circuit breakers to control current exchanged with the one or more energy storage components and protect the one or more energy storage components from the one or more power sources during a fault condition.

Current control and circuit protection for distributed energy resources

Systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of high current protection are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is a power system comprising a solid-state circuit breaker including a solid-state switching device, an energy dissipation branch, an assistive branch, and a controller. The energy dissipation branch is coupled in parallel with the solid-state switching device and includes an energy dissipation device. The assistive branch is coupled in parallel with the solid-state switching device and includes a resistor, an inductor, and a galvanic isolation switching device coupled together in series. The controller is configured to determine the solid-state circuit breaker is conducting a high magnitude current, select a continuous current limiting mode or an intermittent current limiting mode, and operate the solid-state switching device based on the selected current limiting mode.

Intelligent current limiting for solid-state switching

A system for charging multiple electric vehicles is provided. The system includes a first electrical converter that supplies DC power to a ring bus. The ring bus is separated into a plurality of DC buses by electrical breakers. Second converters are connected to the ring bus and convert the DC power supply to a DC voltage suitable for charging electric vehicles connected thereto.

Multiple vehicle charging system

Systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of fault protection. One exemplary embodiment is a protection system including a solid-state switching device, a galvanic isolation switching device, and a controller. The solid-state switching device is coupled between a switch arrangement of a power converter and a direct current (DC) link capacitor of the power converter. The galvanic isolation switching device is coupled between the DC link capacitor and a DC network. The controller is structured to determine a fault is occurring within the DC network, open the solid-state switching device in response to determining the fault is occurring, receive a measurement corresponding to an electrical characteristic of a fault current flowing through the galvanic isolation switching device while the solid-state switching device is open, and determine a location of the fault based on the received measurement.

Solid-state protection for direct current networks

A circuit protection system includes a plurality of circuit protection devices and a central controller. Each circuit protection device includes a protection switch for connecting or disconnecting a corresponding protected circuit, and a sensing module for sensing electrical parameter data. The central controller is in communication with each of the circuit protection devices, and is constructed to receive the electrical parameter data; determine whether a fault condition has occurred based on the electrical parameter data; and send a signal to open the protection switch for each protected circuit experiencing a fault condition.

Circuit protection system

Methods and apparatus for protecting a direct-current (DC) electric power distribution system that includes one or more AC/DC converters and/or one more DC/DC converters, and one or more loads, connected by DC buses. An example method, which is carried out in response to the detection of a fault somewhere in the system, begins with limiting an output current of each of one or more of the converters so that each of the limited converters outputs a limited DC current at or about a corresponding predetermined current level. After the current limiting of the one or more converters has taken place, one or more protection devices in the system are activated, where the activating at least partly depends on the limited DC currents being at or about the predetermined fault current levels.

Fault protection in converter-based DC distribution systems

A control apparatus and corresponding control method use per-unit filtering in a plurality of power-sharing controllers, to obtain a power-sharing command signal for respective ones among a plurality of different energy storage units in a hybrid energy storage system. The hybrid energy storage system includes two or more types of energy storage units and the power-sharing command signal for each energy storage unit is obtained by filtering an input signal using a filter having a filter response that is tailored to the energy storage characteristics of the energy storage unit. The input signal reflects load variations on the electrical grid and may be locally generated or provided by a remote node. While the power-sharing control loops used for each energy storage unit advantageously may be the same in terms of architecture and implementation, each loop uses tailored, dedicated filtering and, possibly, individualized values of one or more other control parameters.

Method and apparatus for controlling a hybrid energy storage system

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of a DC fault isolation system are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is a power conversion system comprising a converter including a midpoint connection structured to receive AC power, a first converter arm, a second converter arm, and a control system. The control system is configured to operate the converter a fault condition mode in response to a DC fault condition, wherein the fault condition mode operates at least one full bridge cell of the second converter arm so as to interrupt current flowing between the midpoint connection and the second DC bus rail and operates the first converter arm so as to allow the AC power to flow between the midpoint connection and the first DC bus rail in response to detecting the DC fault condition.

Fault isolation and system restoration using power converter

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of power transmission systems are disclosed herein. One exemplary embodiment is an AC power transmission system converted for transmission of high voltage direct current (HVDC) power, the converted system comprising an AC cable system, a first converter system, a second converter system, and a control system. The first converter system is structured to receive and convert AC power to DC power and output the DC power. The second power converter system is structured to receive the DC power, convert the DC power to a second AC power, and output the second AC power. The control system is structured to receive power demand information, determine a reduced DC voltage less than a rated HVDC voltage, control the first converter system such that the DC power is controlled to the reduced voltage, and control the second power converter system to operate in an active power control mode.

Direct current transmission system and method

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of fault location in DC power distribution systems are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is a DC power distribution system including a plurality of zones each including a DC power distribution line and a protective device. Each protective device structured to sense one or more electrical characteristics of a line and to controllably open a circuit including the line. At least one intelligent electronic device is structured to determine a line inductance based upon electrical characteristics sensed by one or more of the protective devices and to evaluate a location of the line fault based upon the determined line inductance.

Fault location of DC distribution systems

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of fault location in DC power distribution systems are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is a DC power distribution system comprising at least one DC power distribution network and at least two protective devices operatively coupled to the DC power distribution network. Each protective device is structured to sense one or more electrical characteristics associated with the DC power distribution network and to controllably interrupt current through the DC power distribution line. A control system is structured to determine the location of a high impedance fault between two of the protective devices using one or more electrical characteristics sensed by the two protective devices to calculate the inductance and resistance of the portion of the DC power distribution line between one of the protective devices and the high impedance fault.

High impedance fault location in DC distribution systems

Technologies for detecting a fault location in a DC electrical distribution system include a bus protection unit that monitors a DC electrical bus. The bus protection unit includes at least one sensor to produce sensor data indicative of one or more characteristics of the DC electrical bus monitored by the bus protection unit. The bus protection unit monitors the sensor data, determines whether a fault has occurred based on the sensor data, and determines whether the fault occurred within a bus zone defined by the DC electrical bus in response to determining that the fault has occurred. Further, the bus detection unit trips isolation devices within the bus zone in response to a determination that the fault occurred within the bus zone or a communication from another bus protection unit indicating the fault has occurred within the bus zone. The bus protection unit transmits a bus fault indication signal to another bus protection unit in response to a determination that the fault has occurred.
