Propylene-ethylene copolymer compositions and production methods are provided. The copolymer compositions can be particularly advantageous for use in hot fill packaging of foodstuffs. The propylene-ethylene copolymers can be produced using a Ziegler-Natta catalyst and an alkoxysilane electron donor. The compositions can have propylene as a primary monomer with an ethylene content ranging from 2.0 to 6.0 percent by weight with a xylene soluble content of less than 7.0 percent by weight.

Propylene-ethylene copolymer compositions suitable for hot fill packaging of foodstuffs

The present disclosure provides compositions, films and articles containing a random propylene/ethylene copolymer and a substituted phenylene aromatic diester. Polymerization with an improved catalyst system increases the amount of ethylene incorporated into the random propylene/ethylene copolymer backbone which results in improved thermal properties, improved optical properties, and improved heat seal properties.

A polypropylene impact copolymer is disclosed. The propylene impact copolymer composition comprises from 60 to 90 percent by weight of the impact copolymer composition of a matrix phase, which can be a homopolymer polypropylene or random polypropylene copolymer having from 0.1 to 7 mol percent of units derived from ethylene or C-Calpha olefins. The propylene impact copolymer composition also comprises from 10 to 40 percent by weight of the impact copolymer composition of a dispersed phase, which comprises a propylene/alpha-olefin copolymer having from 6 to 40 mol percent of units derived from ethylene or C-Calpha olefins, wherein the dispersed phase has a comonomer content which is greater than the comonomer content in the matrix phase. The propylene impact copolymer composition is further characterized by having the ratio of the dispersed phase intrinsic viscosity (IV) to the matrix phase IV being 0.95 or less. The polypropylene impact copolymers of the present invention are well suited for making spunbond fibers which can be used to make nonwoven fabrics having good haptics.

Polypropylene resin suitable for soft nonwoven applications

The present invention relates to polymer compositions comprising a propylene impact copolymer and a processing aid, as well as corrugated boards made from such compositions. The impact copolymer has a melt flow range of from 1.5 to 3.5 g/10 min and a dispersed phase content of from 5 to 30% by weight. The dispersed phase of the impact copolymer has an ethylene content of from 30- to 70% by weight of the dispersed phase. The matrix phase of the impact copolymer is a propylene homopolymer or a random copolymer comprising units derived from propylene and a second copolymer selected from either ethylene or 1-butene wherein the units derived from the second copolymer comprise from 0 to 5% by weight of the dispersed phase.

Impact copolymer compositions for use in corrugated board

Propylene impact copolymers (ICPs) are provided which comprise: (a) a matrix phase which comprises from 60 to 95 weight % of a polypropylene polymer containing from 0 to 6 mole % of units derived from one or more alpha-olefins other than propylene, and (b) a dispersed phase which comprises from 5 to 40 weight % of a copolymer derived from a first comonomer which can be either propylene or ethylene together with a second alpha-olefin comonomer. The ICP is further characterized by having a beta/alpha ratio less than or equal to 1.1. The ICPs of the present invention are particularly well suited for applications requiring clear, tough polymers such as thin walled injection molded articles for frozen food packaging applications.

Propylene impact copolymers having good optical properties

The invention is directed to a composition suitable for high gloss air quenched blown films. The films are comprised of from 2 to 15 percent by weight of a substantially isotactic propylene-based copolymer having a melt flow rate of at least 5 g/10 minutes and having from 8 to 21 mole percent units derived from an alpha olefin; and from 85 to 98 percent by weight of an ethylene-based copolymer having a melt index of from 0.1 to 9 g/10 minutes. An air quenched blown film made from the inventive composition exhibits a value for gloss greater than the value for gloss exhibited by an air quenched blown film made solely from the ethylene-based copolymer.

Composition suitable for high gloss blown film and films made therefrom

A unique thermoplastic olefin composition having: (a) at least 40 percent by weight of a propylene-alpha olefin copolymer based on the total weight of polymers in the composition, the propylene-alpha olefin copolymer having at least 60 percent by weight units derived from propylene, at least 6 percent by weight units derived from an alpha olefin, a molecular weight distribution less than 3.5, and a broad composition distribution; and (b) at least 20 percent by weight of a polypropylene based on the total weight of polymers in the composition, the polypropylene having at least 93 percent by weight units derived from propylene, a molecular weight distribution of greater than 3.5, a heat of fusion greater than the heat of fusion exhibited by the propylene-alpha olefin copolymer, and a melting point Tof at least 120&#xb0; C.

Thermoplastic elastomer compositions

Films with excellent machine direction (MD) tear properties comprise at least one layer made from a polymer comprising: (A) at least 50 weight percent (wt%) propylene; and (B) at least 5 wt % ethylene and/or one or more unsaturated comonomers. Representative of component (B) unsatuarated comonomers are the C&#x3b1;-olefins, Cdienes, styrenic compounds, and the like. Preferably, the film has at least one of a (i) haze value of less than about 10, (ii) 45 degree gloss of greater than about 65, and (iii) dart value of greater than about 100 g/mil. In one preferred embodiment, the layer comprises a compolymer characterized as having at least one of the following properties: (i)C NMR peaks corresponding to a regio-error at about 14.6 and about 15.7 ppm, the peaks of about equal intensity, (ii) a B-value greater than about 1.4 when the comonomer content, i.e., the units derived from ethylene and/or the unsaturated comonomer(s), of the copolymer is at least about 3 wt %, (iii) a skewness index, S, greater than about &#x2212;1.20, (iv) a DSC curve with a Tthat remains essentially the same and a Tthat decreases as the amount of comonomer, i.e., the units derived from ethylene and/or the unsaturated comonomer(s), in the copolymer is increased, and (v) an X-ray diffraction pattern that reports more gamma-forn crystals than a comparable copolymer prepared with a Ziegler-Natta (Z-N) catalyst.

Films comprising isotactic propylene copolymers

The subject invention provides a film having at least one layer comprising an interpolymer of ethylene and at least on comonomer selected from the group consisting of C-C&#x3b1;-olefins, dienes, and cycloalkenes, wherein the interpolymer is characterized as having a high degree of processability, good optical performance, and good mechanical properties. The subject invention further provides film fabrication processes and polymer compositions which are useful in preparing the subject films.

The invention also includes methods for making the coupled propylene polymer and methods for making the blend composition. Blends and sealant compositions comprising isotactic propylene copolymers

The present invention includes a coextruded film having at least two layers. The first layer contains a coupled propylene polymer and the second layer contains an in-reactor blend of a linear low density polyethylene fraction and a substantially linear polyethylene fraction. Alternatively, the second layer may include a homogeneously branched linear polyethylene. Preferably, the first layer makes up about 50 weight percent or less of the overall coextruded film structure. The first layer may also contain a polyethylene, such as a linear low density polyethylene, a low density polyethylene, a high density polyethylene, substantially linear polyethylene, a homogeneously branched linear polyethylene, an in-reactor blend of linear low density polyethylene and a substantially linear polyethyelene, and blends thereof.

Composition and films thereof

The invention includes a process of preparing a coupled polymer characterized by heating an admixture containing (1) at least one ethylene polymer or blend of ethylene polymers having a density of at least about 0.89 g/mL and less than about 0.935 g/mL and a comonomer content between about 0.5 and 50 weight percent of an alpha olefin having greater than 2 and less than 20 carbon atoms per molecule and (2) a coupling amount of at least one poly(sulfonyl azide) to at least the decomposition temperature of the poly(sulfonyl azide) for a period sufficient for decomposition of at least about 80 weight percent of the poly(sulfonyl azide) and sufficient to result in a coupled polymer. The amount of poly(sulfonyl azide) is preferably from about 0.01 to about 5 weight percent of polymers in the admixture. The invention also includes any composition which is the product of any of the processes of the invention and articles made from those compositions, particularly any film of any composition of the invention. Additionally the invention includes a use of any composition of the invention in a process of blowing, casting or calendaring a film. More particularly the invention includes articles of compositions of the invention which are trash bags, agricultural films, construction films, or geomembranes, grocery sacks, sealant layers, tie layers, produce bags, garment bags, shipping sacks, medical films, stretch films, shrink films, agricultural films, greenhouse films, construction films, or stretch hooders.
