In a generic, end-to-end address resolution methodology, destination addresses in one format are translated into local addresses of different formats for purposes of routing calls across a plurality of interconnected networks which use different address formats. Translation of addresses is accomplished through either database query or by conversion algorithm. To facilitate routing across a particular network, the signaling message of the call is repacked with the local address as the routing address. The original destination address is preserved and carried transparently across that network. The signaling message is then repacked with the destination address as the routing address. Bi-level addressing schemes are supported, so that a network-level destination address and user-level destination address may both be carried transparently across a particular network.

Method and apparatus for ATM address resolution

A method of address resolution for the transfer of voice and voice data calls through multiple domains in a broadband data network is described. The implementation of broadband data networks as transport backbones for voice and voice data calls requires address resolution to determine the destination node for each call. Because of the projected frequency at which new access peripherals will be added to such broadband data networks, manual maintenance of translation tables is impractical. The invention therefore provides an automated method for address resolution which permits voice interface control units associated with the broadband data network nodes to automatically maintain the required translation tables. Next-hop resolution routing tables may be maintained at every node or only at nodes designated as signaling gateways between broadband data network domains. If the broadband data network is an ATM network, switched virtual circuits are set up in reverse from ATM destination nodes in order to reduce call admission and setup time. The advantage is automated maintenance of translation tables which may be tailored to meet the operating policy of network managers that control respective domains.

Method of address resolution for the transfer of synchronous transfer mode calls through multiple domains in a broadband data network

A method and apparatus for pre-establishing and managing Switched Virtual Circuits (SVCs) and Switch Cross-Connects (XCs) to support rapid setup of real-time services in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks are described. SVCs and XCs are pre-established and cached in accordance with communications application-specific rules and maintenance algorithms for each destination and service characteristics in the backbone network. The intelligent management of cached SVCs and XCs permits the backbone network to meet the tight delay budget of delay-sensitive communication applications. With proper management of cached resources, connection setup can be rapidly effected even during periods of high demand. The advantage is a connection setup mechanism having adequate granularity to ensure both efficient network usage and rapid response to service requests.

Method and apparatus for caching switched virtual circuits in an ATM network

A method and apparatus for transferring data associated with synchronous transfer mode (STM) calls through an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network are described. The apparatus includes a voice interface control unit, a signaling interface and a TDM peripheral device associated with each edge node in the ATM network. The voice interface control unit controls the ingress and egress of STM calls to the network. The signaling interface sends and receives common channel signaling messages associated with calls originating in the STM network and passes message content to the voice interface control unit. The TDM peripheral device converts STM network and passes message content to the voice interface control unit. The TDM peripheral device converts STM calls to ATM cells, and vice versa. The method disclosed involves enabling the network interface controls at edge nodes in the ATM network with a capacity to receive, interpret and send common channel signaling messages associated with STM cells, while using native ATM signaling, such as P-NNI within the ATM network. The advantage is the ability to transfer STM data through an ATM network without modifying the ATM network itself. The ATM network can therefore be utilized to its fullest extent as a multi-service backbone network. SVC and cross-connect caching can also be used, which further enhances network performance and resource utilization.
