An example article includes a substrate and a barrier coating on the substrate. The barrier coating includes a matrix including a rare-earth disilicate extending from an inner interface facing the substrate to an outer surface opposite the inner interface. The barrier coating includes a graded volumetric distribution of rare-earth oxide rich (REO-rich) phase regions in the matrix along a direction from the inner interface to the outer surface. The graded volumetric distribution defines a first volumetric density of the REO-rich phase regions at a first region of the matrix adjacent the outer surface. The graded volumetric distribution defines a second volumetric density of the REO-rich phase regions at a second region of the matrix adjacent the inner surface. The second volumetric density is different from the first volumetric density. An example technique includes forming the barrier coating on the substrate of a component.

CMAS-resistant barrier coatings

In some examples, an article includes a ceramic or a ceramic or ceramic matrix composite (CMC) substrate; and an abradable coating on the CMC substrate. The abradable coating includes a plurality of first rare earth (RE) silicate layers in an alternating arrangement with a plurality of second RE silicate layers, wherein the first RE silicate layers include a rare earth monosilicate and the second RE silicate layers include a rare earth disilicate, and wherein the first RE silicate layers include a greater concentration of the rare earth monosilicate than the second RE silicate layers.

CMAS-resistant abradable coatings

An article may include a substrate, such as a silicon-containing ceramic matrix composite, an environmental barrier coating (EBC) layer on the substrate, and a CMAS-resistant EBC layer on the EBC layer. The EBC layer may include at least one rare-earth disilicate (REDS). The CMAS-resistant EBC layer may include at least one rare-earth monosilicate (REMS) configured to react with CMAS to form crystalline reaction products. The CMAS-resistant EBC layer may include a plurality of vertical cracks extending from a surface of the CMAS-resistant EBC layer at least partially into the CMAS-resistant EBC layer. Additionally, or alternatively, the EBC layer may include a plurality of vertical cracks extending from a surface of the EBC layer into at least a portion of the EBC layer.

CMAS-resistant environmental barrier coating system

In one example, a method for forming a coating system including an environmental barrier coating (EBC) and abradable coating on a substrate. The method may include depositing the EBC on a ceramic or ceramic matrix composite (CMC) substrate to form an as-deposited EBC; heat treating the as-deposited EBC following the deposition of the as-deposited EBC on the substrate to form a heat treated EBC; and subsequently depositing an abradable coating on the heat treated EBC to form an as-deposited abradable coating. The as-deposited abradable coating may be heat treated to form a heat treated abradable coating.

Post deposition heat treatment procedures for EBC and abradable coating on ceramic or CMC substrate

An article may include a substrate including a ceramic matrix composite (CMC); a composite coating layer including a first coating material that includes a rare-earth disilicate and a second coating material that includes at least one of a rare-earth monosilicate, a CMAS-resistant material, or a high-temperature dislocating material, where the second coating material forms a substantially continuous phase in the composite coating layer.

Composite coating layer for ceramic matrix composite substrate

The disclosure describes braze tape coatings and technique to form articles with differing physical properties in different layers or regions of the article. An example method includes forming a braze tape defining at least one layer that includes a first segment and a second segment. A portion of the second segment in the plane is adjacent to a portion of the first segment in a plane of the layer. The method also includes positioning the braze tape on a surface of a substrate, the plane of the layer of the braze tape being parallel to the surface of the substrate. The method also includes heating the braze tape to melt a constituent of at least one of the first coating material and the second coating material to form a densified coating on the surface of the substrate.

Tape casting coating for ceramic matrix composite

An article that includes a substrate; a first layer including yttria and zirconia or hafnia, where the first layer has a columnar microstructure and includes predominately the zirconia or hafnia; a second layer on the first layer, the second layer including zirconia or hafnia, ytterbia, samaria, and at least one of lutetia, scandia, ceria, neodymia, europia, and gadolinia, where the second layer includes predominately zirconia or hafnia, and where the second layer has a columnar microstructure; and a third layer on the second layer, the third layer including zirconia or hafnia, ytterbia, samaria, and a rare earth oxide including at least one of lutetia, scandia, ceria, neodymia, europia, and gadolinia, where the third layer has a dense microstructure and has a lower porosity than the second layer.

Thermal barrier coatings for components in high-temperature mechanical systems

In some examples, an article may include a substrate and a coating system on the substrate. The coating system may include a layer comprising a plurality of voids, wherein respective voids of the plurality of voids define respective void volumes; and a nucleating agent within at least some of the respective void volumes of the layer, wherein the nucleating agent is configured to induce crystallization of the molten CMAS. The coating system may include an environmental barrier coating, thermal barrier coating, and/or abradable coating.

Coating system including nucleating agent

The disclosure describes articles and techniques that include an airfoil having a hybrid coating system to provide improved particle impact resistance and improve CMAS attack resistance on the pressure side of the airfoil and improved thermal load protection on the suction side of the airfoil. An example article for a gas turbine engine may include a substrate, and a hybrid environmental barrier coating (EBC) including a relatively dense EBC layer on a first portion of the substrate and a relatively porous EBC layer on a second portion of the substrate, where the first portion of the substrate is different from the second portion of the substrate, and wherein at least a portion of the relatively porous EBC layer overlaps at least a portion of the relatively dense EBC layer in an overlap region.

Hybrid airfoil coatings

In one example, a method for forming an environmental barrier coating (EBC) and/or abradable coating on a substrate. The method may include depositing a coating on a ceramic or ceramic matrix composite (CMC) substrate to form an as-deposited coating, wherein the coating includes at least one of an environmental barrier coating (EBC) and an abradable coating. The method further comprises heat treating the as-deposited coating at or above a first temperature for a first period of time following the deposition of the as-deposited coating on the substrate, wherein heat treating the as-deposited coating includes heating the as-deposited coating to or above the first temperature at a controlled rate. The heat treatment may be configured to at least one of decrease the open pores and/or microcracks of the heat-treated coating compared to the as-deposited coating or control a grain size of the heat-treated coating.

Post deposition heat treatment of coating on ceramic or ceramic matrix composite substrate

A system may include a stationary component including: a substrate and an abradable layer on the substrate. The system also may include a rotating component including a tip and an abrasive coating system on the tip. The abrasive coating system may include a barrier layer and an abrasive material. The barrier layer may include at least one of hafnon, hafnium oxide, a blend of hafnium oxide and silicon or silicon oxide, a rare earth silicate, BSAS, stabilized zirconia, or stabilized hafnia. The blade track or blade shroud and the gas turbine blade are configured so the abrasive coating system contacts a portion of the abradable layer during rotation of the rotating component. The abradable layer is configured to be abraded by the contact by the abrasive coating system.

Abrasive coating for high-temperature mechanical systems

An example article includes a substrate and a barrier coating on the substrate extending from an inner interface facing the substrate to an outer surface opposite the inner interface. The barrier coating includes a bulk matrix and a plurality of discrete plugs inset within the bulk matrix and dispersed across the outer surface of the barrier coating. An example technique includes forming the barrier coating on the substrate of a component.

Barrier coatings

A method includes predicting a composition of calcium-magnesium-aluminum-silicate (CMAS) to be encountered by a high temperature mechanical system during use of the high temperature mechanical system. The method further includes selecting a composition of a CMAS-resistant barrier coating layer based at least in part on the predicted composition of CMAS. The CMAS-resistant barrier coating layer includes a base composition and at least one secondary oxide selected based on the predicted composition of CMAS. The at least one secondary oxide includes at least one of an oxide of a divalent element, an oxide of a trivalent element, or an oxide of a tetravalent element. The CMAS-resistant barrier coating layer comprises greater than 0 mol. % and less than about 7 mol. % of the at least one secondary oxide.

In some examples, the disclosure describes an article and a method of making the same that includes a substrate defining an outer surface, a barrier layer on the outer surface of the substrate, the barrier layer defining a textured surface having a plurality of cells, each cell having a geometry and a depth, and an overlying layer formed on the textured surface of the barrier layer. The barrier layer may be configured to reduce migration of material from the substrate to the overlaying layer to reduce or prevent formation of cristobalite phase thermally grown oxide.
