A method and system for providing seamless mobile IP connectivity between mobile stations (MS) connected to a PCS network via base stations (BS) connected to base station switching centers (BSCs). The BSCs are connected to a mobile station switching station (MSC) and are configured to direct voice traffic from the MS to the MSC. A gateway router (GR) is connected between the BSCs and the Internet and each BSC is configured as an IP data node. One or more subnets are defined, each of which includes at least one BSC. Each MS is assigned a permanent IP address and associated with a home subnet. When the system detects that the MS is connected to a BSC outside of its home subnet, it is assigned a care-of address to the MS to which IP data can be forwarded. IP data from the MS is routed through the GR. IP data directed to the MS is directed to the MS's permanent IP address. If the MS is connected to a BSC outside of its home subnet, the data traffic is forwarded to the MS's care-of address. A mobile station and base station controller for use in such a network is also presented.

PCS-to-mobile IP internetworking

A communications network may include a translation server containing a NGPN-to-HLR mapping table. The translation server may be a single, centralized translation server; or several TSs may be on the network. When a number of translation servers are used, a VLR or other network entity receiving an NGPN determines which translation server contains the mapping for that NGPN. One way to do this is when a subscriber roams out of his &ldquo;home&rdquo; region, his NGPN is presented to the &ldquo;foreign&rdquo; service provider's TS. The foreign TS broadcasts a query to all other TSs in the network either simultaneously or in stages. Another way is that a VLR receiving a NGPN performs a hash function on the NGPN. The hash function identifies a translation server. The VLR may then query the translation server and obtain the NGPN-to-HLR mapping. Where a hash function is used, an extendable hash function to accommodate the addition of new TSs without changing the VLR operating systems. Alternatively, where translation servers are identified with hash functions, further additional TSs are accommodated by a two stage TS. A TS split into a number of TSs performs a second hash function to determine the location of the TS having the NGPN-to-HLR mapping requested.

Method and apparatus supporting non-geographic telephone numbers

A method for enabling the integration of the Personal Access Communications System (PACS) which supports low-tier radio, wireless communication devices with a GSM network used to support high-tier, cellular devices to allow connection of the PACS system to public switched telephone networks that do not have Advanced Intelligent Network capabilities. The functions of the conventional PACS Access Manager are redistributed among the various components of the PACS/GSM integrated system. Modifications to the PACS protocol to make it compatible with GSM protocol are detailed.

Method and system for supporting PACS using a GSM mobile switching center

Radio ports (RPs) in an unlicensed personal communications system adaptively, autonomously set their interference threshold and/or transmission power levels. This may be done by the RP measuring the signal level on each of the available channels and then setting the interference threshold and/or power level according to these measurements. In a preferred method, the interference threshold is determined by measuring the signal level on each channel, ranking the channels in order of measured signal level, and using these rankings to determine the threshold. The transmission power level may be set with reference to the adaptive interference threshold level. This level is determined by using the system and FCC power limitations and current conditions to provide a satisfactory transmission level.

Method for unlicensed band port to autonomously determine interference

Disclosed are a system and method for providing wireless access to a network, such as the internet. The disclosed technique takes into account the inherent asymmetric and bursty characteristics of internet communication to obtain more efficiency in the communication between a user and an access provider. In doing so, the invention provides a technique that can be used to economically provide wireless access to the internet at data rates that are comparable to what a user would receive over ISDN lines.

Method and system for wireless internet access

A number of RPs stagger the times in which they begin searching for available channels. In a preferred method, one of a plurality of RPs in a UPCS system is selected to have a first start time. The system determines which RPs in the system can 'see' the selected RP. Each of these RPs is given a unique stagger start time. This process may be repeated until each RP in the system is assigned a stagger start time. Alternatively, if there are fewer RPs in the system than there are available stagger start times, each RP may be selected to have a unique stagger start time.

Method for assigning band port channels in an unlicensed personal

An improved technique for simultaneously performing bit synchronization and error detection of received digital data bursts in a time division multiplexed/time division multiple access (TDM/TDMA) system, such as that used in conjunction with low power portable digital telephony. With the improved technique both bit synchronization and error detection are performed simultaneously to thereby reduce latency in the transceiver. Since round-trip delay is reduced, echo suppression techniques may not be needed.
