A semiconductor integrated circuit (IC) device is defined by a low-profile package without a die attach pad (DAP). In place of the DAP, an adhesive element is used to retain a die relative to a lead frame during processing. In one example, a method of manufacturing the device includes sealing the lead frame on one side using an adhesive tape and exposing a portion of the tape within a die attach region. The die is secured onto the tape adhesive and held in place during subsequent processing, such as a wire bonding procedure to couple the die to external portions of the frame.

An optical computer mouse has a support structure that can be moved across a surface. An illumination source that illuminates a region of the surface is coupled to the support structure. An imaging system in the mouse includes an optical sensor array that receives light from the illuminated region of the work surface and an image processor that receives data from the optical sensor array. The optical computer mouse may be switched between a navigation mode of operation, in which the image processor detects motion of the optical computer mouse over the work surface, and a barcode reading mode of operation, in which the image processor senses a barcode as the optical computer mouse is moved across a barcode.

An optical navigation device includes a housing, a light source, a navigation sensor, and optics. In accordance with the invention, the light source is a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) that is configured to generate coherent light in the visible light spectrum. For example, the VCSEL generates red coherent light in the range of 600-700 nm. In an embodiment, the VCSEL generates red coherent light at 665 nm&#xb1;20 nm. Because the light generated by the VCSEL is in the visible light spectrum, a human will sense contact with the corresponding beam and will naturally react to avoid injury. This enhances the overall safety of an optical mouse. Additionally, when using a VCSEL that generates visible red light, it is easy to visually determine whether or not the beam is focused directly on a measurement sensor during calibration.

A system for optical navigation includes an optical navigation sensor integrated circuit (IC) configured to generate image information for use in navigation sensing and a collapsible structure which sets the distance between the optical navigation sensor IC and a navigation surface and which can be expanded or collapsed as needed. The collapsible structure includes a collapse system configured to allow the collapsible structure to be in an expanded state or a collapsed state. The collapse structure has a smaller profile dimension in the collapsed state than in the expanded state. The collapsible structure is placed in the expanded state for navigation sensing and in the collapsed state for storage and/or charging.

A pointing device and method for using the same to measure the motion of that pointing device over a surface is disclosed. The pointing device includes an illumination system, an imaging system, and a controller. The illumination system generates light in a plurality of wavelength bands and illuminates a surface below the pointing device with light from one of the wavelength bands. The imaging system records images of the illuminated surface. The controller selects the wavelength band used to illuminate the surface, compares first and second images recorded by the imaging system at different times when the surface is illuminated with that wavelength band, and determines a displacement indicative of the direction and distance the positioning device moved between the two different times.

A method and apparatus for focusing an image of a work surface on an optical sensor array in an optical pointing device. Light from a region of the work surface is captured by an imaging system incorporating an optical coupling system and the optical sensor array. The focus of the imaging system is adjusted in accordance with the distance between the optical pointing device and the work surface. The distance may be sensed, or inferred by adjusting the imaging system to maximize the focus of the image.

The sensor chip is electrically connected to bonding pads on the inner surface of the base plate. The bonding pads are electrically connected through the base plate to bonding pads on the outer surface of the base plate. The bonding pads on the outer surface of the base plate are elements in this application of Ball Grid Array technology.
