Methods are classified as simple or complex. Complex methods are modified to add a tracer. Methods classified as simple are not modified to add a tracer. There are many different standards that can be used within the spirit of the present invention to classify methods as simple or complex. In one embodiment, a method is complex if it meets three criteria: (1) the method has an access level of public or package; (2) the method is non-synthetic and (3) the method calls at least one other method. Methods that do not satisfy all three criteria are classified as simple methods. In other embodiments, a method can be classified as complex if it satisfies two of the above criteria, or other similar criteria.

Simple method optimization

A method and apparatus for routing an event to a human interface object in a computer system. A routing type is assigned to each event type which may be received. The event is received and the routing type assigned to the event is determined. The event is then routed based on the routing type. In embodiments of the invention, the routing type may be geometric, focus, or broadcast, but is extensible. The routing types may be added or removed from a list of routing types, at request of processes.

A user specifies a threshold trace period and can initiate transaction tracing on one, some or all of the transactions running on a software system. Transactions with an execution time that exceeds the threshold trace period are reported to the user using a graphical user interface that lists transactions exceeding the specified threshold. For each listed transaction, a visualization can be provided that enables the user to immediately understand where time was being spent in the traced transaction.

Transaction tracer

A method and system are provided for developing images for use in a graphical user interface. In one implementation, the method includes displaying a graphical user interface on a display device, and providing an operating system on a computer that is in communication with the display device. The operating system includes an imaging object structure that is an abstract base class from which subclasses of text imaging objects, picture imaging objects, and pattern imaging objects are derivable. The subclasses of text imaging objects, picture imaging objects, and pattern imaging objects are used to respectively generate text imaging objects, picture imaging objects, and pattern imaging objects for display in the graphical user interface.

Method and system for image rendering including polymorphic image data in a graphical user interface

A system is disclosed that can determine whether a routine is stalled. The system does not require the developer of the routine to add code for the purpose of detecting whether the routine is stalled. Furthermore, the system can be used to monitor various routines at different levels of granularity, such as at the thread level, method level, or other levels. One embodiment of the present invention allows a user to specify a method and an expected time frame. Code for that method is modified to add additional code that implements a timing mechanism. The timing mechanism is used to detect when a thread enters that method and does not return within an approximation of the expected time frame. Other embodiments are also within the scope of the present invention.

Determining that a routine has stalled

An object-oriented item is used to define the behavior of an item in a dialog box in a windows environment. A class hierarchical library is established with a base class setting up initial definitions of instance variables and methods used to define the behavior of a customized item. An applications developer can create customized items for a dialog box by creating subclasses. The subclasses will inherit portions of the superclasses, and the developer will customize the items by overriding certain methods. The object, an instance of the class, is referenced by a resource associated with an application.

Data about a transaction is accessed. The transaction has a set of components. A graphical representation of the components of the transaction is displayed such that the graphical representation includes a time axis and a call stack position axis. In one embodiment, the time axis depicts time left to right and the call stack position axis depicts call stack position top to bottom. Additionally, the user interface can receive a selection of one of the components, access data for the selected component and display additional details about that selected component.

Potential sources of memory leaks are identified by tracking the size of groups of stored items and determining based on the growth pattern of the groups whether the groups of stored items are potential sources of memory leaks. An example of a group of stored items is an instance of a Java collection. If the growth pattern of a particular group of stored items indicates that it may be the source of a memory leak, that group is reported to a user and will continue to be tracked.

Detecting a stalled routine

A system for providing polymorphic image data for images in a graphical user interface on a computer system includes an operating system, and an imaging object structure, the imaging object structure included in the operating system and utilized to generate images in the graphical user interface. Additionally, the imaging object structure further comprises a subclass of imaging objects, the subclasses includes singular imaging objects and composite imaging objects. The singular imaging objects further include, but are not limited to, text imaging objects, picture imaging objects, pattern imaging objects, and icon imaging objects. Additionally, the composite imaging objects generate composite images of a desired combination of singular images generated by the singular imaging objects. Further, the imaging object structure includes a SOM object structure.

The system receives three sets of inputs: program class definitions, a set of rules, and additional class definitions to be merged with the program class definitions. There are three types of rules: the first rule is used to substitute the allocation of an object of a new class for the allocation of the object based on an original class; the second rule is used to change code that allocates an object of an original class to code that calls a static method that allocates the object of the original class; and the third rule is used to a replace a new static field for an original static field. The system separately reads each of the original class definitions into a class data structure and performs the modifications to the class data structure according to the set of rules. The resulting class data structure is written to an output stream.

System for modifying object oriented code

A method and apparatus provides for automatic generation of an intuitive, logical focusing order for items in a dialog window in a computer system. The focus ordering can be generated dynamically at runtime or statically. In particular, the focusing order is based on the locations and types of the items in the dialog box and is generated as follows. A customizable spatial comparison function, called herein 'comparison function', is generated such that two items can be compared and an ordering of the items determined. The spatial comparison function extrapolates or imposes on each item being compared a region which is defined by the extent of the item's bounds. The regions are then compared to determine the focus ordering of the item. The items in the dialog box are sorted using the comparison function. The items are then grouped based on their locations and their types. Items that are of a similar type and in the same horizontal or vertical line are grouped together. Any items not yet assigned to a group and whose bounding regions intersect with any existing group's bounding region are added to that existing group. The item groups are then sorted using the comparison function. A focus order list is formed by iterating through the groups in order and iterating through the items in each group in order to form a list that contains an intuitive focus ordering for the items in the dialog.
