A surgical instrument having an end effector mounted on the end of an elongate shaft extending from a handle. The end-effector is capable of different operations, including grasping, cutting, and sealing and/or coagulating tissue, and one of the operations is controlled by a trigger mechanism contained within the handle. In some embodiments, the end effector includes a pair of curved jaw members and blade assembly having a cutting blade at its distal end. The trigger mechanism drives blade assembly longitudinally within the elongate shaft such that the cutting blade protrudes between the jaw members. To help the trigger mechanism push blade assembly around the curved jaws, the distal end of blade has a graduated flexibility that easily bends to the shape of the jaw members. The distal end of the blade may be provided with a low friction coating so that it can easily slide between the jaw members.

Electrosurgical device

An electrosurgical instrument includes a handle including an actuating mechanism movable between a first position and a second position, and a pair of opposing first and second jaw members. A first sealing electrode is located on an inner surface of the first jaw member, and a second sealing electrode is located on an inner surface of the second jaw member. A plurality of stop members are longitudinally disposed on one or both of the inner surfaces of the jaw members, and at least two of the plurality of stop members are of different heights such that the first and second jaw members flex when moved to their closed position such that the distance between the first and second sealing electrodes is non-uniform.

Electrosurgical instrument

A bipolar surgical instrument () comprises a body (), first and second opposed jaws () located at the distal end of a shaft (), the first jaw () being movable with respect to the second jaw () between an open position in which the first and second jaws () are spaced apart from one another, and a closed position in which the first and second jaws () are adjacent one another. The first and second elongate jaw members () have respective first and second electrodes. A controller is operable to determine a mode of operation depending upon a measurement of impedance between the first and second jaws.

Bipolar electrosurgical instruments

A substantially planar elongate cutting blade () for a bipolar surgical instrument () is disclosed. The cutting blade has first and second opposed edges and defining a longitudinal axis, and comprises a proximal end region which extends between the first and second edges over a first distance in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, and a distal end region defining a cutting surface which extends between the first and second edges over a second distance in a distance perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, the first distance being greater than the second distance. The first and second edges have respective portions that extend at first and second acute angles respectively with respect to the longitudinal axis, and the cutting surface extends transversely at a third angle with respect to the longitudinal axis, the third angle being not equal to the first or second angle.

Cutting blades for bipolar surgical instruments

A bipolar surgical instrument comprises a body, first and second opposed jaws located at the distal end of a shaft, the first jaw being movable with respect to the second jaw between an open position in which the first and second jaws are spaced apart from one another, and a closed position in which the first and second jaws are adjacent one another. The first and second elongate jaw members have respective first and second electrodes. A controller is operable to determine a starting voltage for application to the jaws.

Bipolar electrosurigal instruments

A jaw member for an electrosurgical instrument is manufactured by providing a jaw housing () having a longitudinal jaw section (), and an electrically conductive plate () including one or more passages () therein. The electrically conductive plate is disposed on the jaw section of the jaw housing, and placed into a mold (). A flowable insulating material () is injected into the mold to secure the electrically conductive plate to the jaw housing, such that the flowable material () flows through the one or more passages () to form one or more stop members () that project a predetermined distance from the electrically conductive plate.

Manufacturing electrosurgical instruments

A shaft assembly for a microwave ablation applicator which includes a shaft assembly and an antenna assembly located within the shaft assembly is disclosed. The shaft assembly comprises an elongate shaft which extends from a first end to a second end thereof, and which defines therein a hollow inner volume and a longitudinal axis of the antenna assembly, and an applicator tip mounted on the second end of the elongate shaft. The applicator tip defines an annular slot with which the second end of the elongate shaft engages. At least part a portion of the second end of the shaft is of a fibre reinforced plastics material having a plurality of elongate fibres bound in a plastics material, at least some of the fibres extending at least partially circumferentially around the annular slot of the applicator tip.

Microwave ablation applicators

A shaft assembly for a microwave ablation applicator having a shaft assembly and an antenna assembly located within the shaft assembly is disclosed. The shaft assembly comprises an elongate shaft which extends from a first end to a second end thereof and an applicator tip mounted on the second end of the elongate shaft.

An electrosurgical system includes an electrosurgical instrument with a pair of opposing first and second jaw members (), (). A first sealing electrode () is located on the first jaw member (), while a second sealing electrode () is located on the second jaw member (). One or both of the sealing electrodes are provided with electrically conductive stop members (), the one or more stop members maintaining a predetermined spacing between the first and second sealing electrodes when the jaw members are in their closed position. One or more insulating members (), (), () are present to prevent the conductive stop members from causing an electrical short between the first and second sealing electrodes when the jaw members are in their closed position. An electrosurgical generator () includes a controller () capable of supplying a sensing voltage between one or more of the conductive stop members () and a return electrode (), (), () present on one or other of the jaw members, the controller measuring the impedance between the one or more stop members and the return electrode in order to measure a parameter of the tissue grasped between the jaws of the instrument.

Electrosurgical system

A jaw member for an electrosurgical instrument is manufactured by providing a jaw housing () having a longitudinal jaw section (), and an electrically conductive plate (). The electrically conductive plate is placed into a mould, and a first flowable insulating material () is injected into the mould such that the flowable material () forms one or more stop members () that project a predetermined distance from the electrically conductive plate. The jaw housing () and the electrically conductive plate () are then placed into a second mould, and a second flowable material () is injected into the mould to secure the electrically conductive plate () to the jaw housing ().
