A multi-element, vascular stent may be used to maintain or enhance patency of a blood vessel. The stent may be used in peripheral blood vessels, which may be long and/or tortuous. By using multiple, separate stent elements that are balloon expandable, the multi-element stent may be stronger than a traditional self-expanding stent but may also be more flexible, due to its multiple-element configuration, than a traditional balloon-expandable stent. Individual stent elements shorten upon expansion creating a space between stent elements. The distance between stent elements when deployed may be based on characteristics of the stent and the target vessel location such that the stent elements do not touch one another during skeletal movement. Thus, the multi-element, vascular stent described herein may be particularly advantageous for treating long lesions in tortuous peripheral blood vessels

Devices, systems, and methods are provided to maintain or enhance blood flow through the blood vessel. Balloon-expandable, bioresorbable, vascular stent elements configured to be implanted in the blood vessel are described herein. Stent elements comprise a closed cell pattern configured to provide their greatest radial strength at or near the diameters of their intended therapeutic use.

A vascular stent may be used to maintain or enhance patency of a blood vessel. The stent elements are formed from a bioresorbable polymer material. The radial rigidity of the stent is configured to decrease after implantation in a vessel as the polymer is absorbed. The thickness of the stent, cell shape, polymer material, and/or treatment of the polymer material may be configured to provide a high initial radial rigidity to the vessel upon implantation and a decrease in the radial rigidity of the vessel over time.

A drug eluting stent can include a stent body having a polymeric coating with a lipophilic and/or hydrophilic element. A drug that has a bioactivity that inhibits cell proliferation can be disposed in the polymeric coating. The drug can be present in the polymer at an amount greater than or equal to about 150 &#x3bc;g/cm. The polymeric coating and drug are configured to cooperate so as to form a diffusion pathway with tissue when the stent is disposed in a body lumen such that the drug preferentially diffuses into the tissue over a body fluid passing through the body lumen such that a maximum systemic blood concentration of the drug is less than about 40 ng/ml.

An apparatus and system for delivering a lipophilic agent associated with a medical device including: a medical device, a first lipophilic agent capable of penetrating a body lumen, wherein the transfer coefficients of the first lipophilic agent is by an amount that is statistically significant of at least approximately 5,000, wherein the first lipophilic agent is associated with the medical device, wherein the first lipophilic agent/medical device is placed adjacent to said body lumen, and wherein a therapeutically effective amount of the first lipophilic agent is delivered to a desired area within a subject. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for improving patency in a subject involving placement of a medical device in a body lumen for treating and/or preventing adjacent diseases or maintaining patency of the body lumen.
