Described herein are embodiments of an approach to diagnosing pancreatic cystic lesions using light scattering spectroscopy. In some embodiments, the approach includes an apparatus including a spatial gating probe to isolate light reflected by the epithelial tissue of the internal cyst surface using spatial gating. In some further embodiments, the apparatus includes a scanning fiber probe that is capable of rotational and linear motion in order to scan the entire internal surface of the cyst. Use of such an approach may be advantageous to improve the accuracy of diagnosing pancreatic cystic lesions as cancerous, precancerous, or benign.

Method and apparatus to determine the malignant potential of pancreatic cysts using light scattering spectroscopy

Method and system for early detection of precancerous and other abnormal changes in tissue of various organs. The system comprises a combination of endoscopic scanning with light scattering spectroscopy and improves detection of abnormalities that may otherwise remain undetected. The system may include a probe that collects data of quality that is independent of a distance of the probe from the scanned tissue. During endoscopy, tissue of an organ is imaged using polarized multispectral light scattering scanning and results are presented to a user in a manner that allows detecting abnormal morphological and biochemical changes in the tissue. A determination of whether to perform biopsy may be performed while the endoscopy is being performed, which thus provides guided biopsy. An entire surface of the organ may be rapidly scanned and results of the scanning are analyzed with a reduced time delay.

The present invention relates to systems and methods for measuring one or more physical characteristics of material such as tissue using optical radiation. The system can use light that is scattered by a tissue layer to determine, for example, the size of nuclei in the tissue layer to aid in the characterization of the tissue. These methods can include the use of fiber optic devices to deliver and collect light from a tissue region of interest to diagnose, for example, whether the tissue is normal or precancerous.
