Examples of mixed reality computing devices that utilize remote sensors and local sensors as input devices are disclosed. In one example, a mixed reality computing device comprises an image sensor, a remote input device, a processor, and storage comprising stored instructions. The stored instructions are executable by the processor to perform object motion tracking and environmental tracking based on output from the image sensor, and in response to detecting that the remote input device is in use, adjust a parameter of the motion tracking while maintaining the environmental tracking.

Object motion tracking with remote device

A system determines the transmission strength of the magnetic field signal. The magnetic field signal is transmitted from a first magnetic-sensor device to a second magnetic-sensor device. The system then determines a first projected distance between the first magnetic-sensor device and the second magnetic-sensor device. Based at least in part on the first projected distance, the system calculates an adjusted transmission strength for the magnetic field signal. The system then causes the first magnetic-sensor device to transmit an adjusted magnetic field signal. The adjusted magnetic field signal comprises the adjusted transmission strength. The system receives, from the second magnetic-field device, the adjusted magnetic field signal. Based at least in part upon the received adjusted magnetic field signal, the system, computes a first pose of the first magnetic-sensor device in relation to the second magnetic-sensor device.

Dynamic transmitter power control for magnetic tracker

A technique for dynamically controlling performance parameters in a six degrees-of-freedom non-line-of-sight sensor subsystem is described. In certain embodiments, a magnetic field sensor is mounted on or proximate to an object to measure a parameter that varies with a position or orientation of the object, where the magnetic field sensor is part of a sensor calibration subsystem. The position or an orientation of the object is determined based on the parameter as indicated in an output of the magnetic field sensor. A receiver bandwidth and/or other operation parameter of the subsystem is dynamically adjusted during operation of the subsystem based on, for example, a transmitter-receiver distance or an operational state of the subsystem.

Dynamic control of performance parameters in a six degrees-of-freedom sensor calibration subsystem

Disclosed are an apparatus and a method of low-latency, low-power eye tracking. In some embodiments, the eye tracking method operates a first sensor having a first level of power consumption that tracks positions of an eye of a user. In response to detection that the eye does not change position for a time period, the method stops operation of the first sensor and instead operates a second sensor that detects a change of position of the eye. The second sensor has a level of power consumption lower than the level of power consumption of the first sensor. Once the eye position changes, the second sensor resumes operation.

Eye tracking using video information and electrooculography information

A mixed-reality system causes a magnetic transmission device to transmit a magnetic field signal. The mixed-reality system also causes a magnetic-field sensing device to determine a measurement of the magnetic field signal. The mixed-reality system then identifies, using one or more input devices, that a magnetically-interfering object is located within a same environment as both the magnetic transmission device and the magnetic-field sensing device. The mixed-reality system also determines one or more characteristics of magnetic field interference that the magnetically-interfering object is imparting on the magnetic transmission device or the magnetic-field sensing device. The mixed-reality system then computes an adjustment to a pose-estimation model based upon the one or more characteristics of magnetic field interference. The pose-estimation model is used to calculate a pose of at least one of the magnetic transmission device or the magnetic-field sensing device.

Magnetic interference detection and correction

In various embodiments, methods and systems, of an ionic varistor system is provided. The ionic varistor system includes an electrolyte-membrane assembly having a liquid electrolyte that is enclosed in a solid electrolyte membrane. The ionic varistor system further includes conductive contacts operably coupled to the electrolyte-membrane assembly. The electrolytic-membrane assembly is operably coupled to an electrical potential surface. As the ionic concentration in the electrical potential surface is increased or decreased, some ions diffuse through the solid electrolyte membrane, causing the ions to mix with the liquid electrolyte to achieve an electrostatic equilibrium state that is thermally and mechanically stable. The liquid electrolyte and the diffused ions create an encapsulated ion channel in the electrolyte-membrane assembly. The electrical conductivity of the encapsulated ion channel increases as the ion concentration increases such that the complete electrolyte-membrane assembly produces electrical resistance. The ion concentration is measured as indicator of electrical potential of the electrical potential surface.

Detecting bipotential with an ionic varistor

In embodiments of a camera-based input device, the input device includes an inertial measurement unit that collects motion data associated with velocity and acceleration of the input device in an environment, such as in three-dimensional (3D) space. The input device also includes at least two visual light cameras that capture images of the environment. A positioning application is implemented to receive the motion data from the inertial measurement unit, and receive the images of the environment from the at least two visual light cameras. The positioning application can then determine positions of the input device based on the motion data and the images correlated with a map of the environment, and track a motion of the input device in the environment based on the determined positions of the input device.

Position-determining input device

A system of a transmitter and a receiver uses magnetic fields to determine the relative position and orientation, or pose, of the two devices. For example, the transmitter could be a handheld control device and the receiver could be an augmented reality or other computing solution. The transmitter transmits two magnetic fields of differing frequencies and differing amplitudes. The receiver selects the one of the magnetic fields with the higher signal to noise ratio to determine the relative pose of the transmitter. By using two magnetic fields of different amplitudes, the pose can be determined over a wider range of separations.

Magnetic tracker with dual-transmit frequency

Examples are disclosed that relate to attributing touch events on a touch-sensitive computing device to a user who performed the touch event. One example provides a computing system, comprising a touch sensor, a communication subsystem comprising a first communication mechanism integrated with the touch sensor, the first communication mechanism configured to communicate with a portable device over a first communication channel via a body-transmissible signal upon detection of a touch input, and also comprising a second communication mechanism configured to communicate with the portable device via a second communication channel. The computing device further comprises instructions executable to detect a touch input via the touch sensor, communicate information to the portable device via the body-transmissible signal using the first communication mechanism, and connect with the portable device via the second communication mechanism based upon the information communicated to the portable device via the body-transmissible signal.

Identifying users from screen touch events

An apparatus for dynamically determining a displacement of a target sensor in an electronic system is disclosed. The apparatus can comprise a non-line-of-sight sensor rigidly mounted on or proximate to the target sensor and configured to measure a parameter that varies with the displacement of the target sensor. The apparatus further can comprise at least one processor coupled to the non-line-of-sight sensor and configured to compute the displacement of the target sensor based on the parameter, and to compute an adjustment value based on the computed displacement.

Virtual rigid framework for sensor subsystem

A mixed-reality system for augmenting spatial sensor device readings comprises a first magnetic sensor device configured to transmit a magnetic field signal at a reduced rate relative to a previous transmission rate. The system also comprises a second magnetic sensor device configured to determine a measurement of the magnetic field signal. The measurement indicates a pose estimation of the first magnetic sensor device. Additionally, the system comprises a third spatial input device configured to acquire pose data of the first spatial input device through means other than the magnetic field signal. Further, the system comprises one or more processors configured to compute a pose of the first magnetic sensor device by at least augmenting the measurement of the magnetic field signal with the pose data acquired by the other spatial input device.

Magnetic tracker power duty cycling

Techniques for providing an enhanced resonant circuit amplifier are described herein. Using a capacitor to couple the drive to the resonant circuit can be problematic because the current flows the same direction with every energy burst, which causes the coupling capacitor to charge up and stop injecting energy into the resonant circuit. To solve this issue, embodiments disclosed herein add a burst of energy once every half cycle. This reduces distortion in the resonant energy. A second benefit is the ability to 'push in' and 'pull out' energy from the resonant circuit, which can prevent the capacitor from charging up and allow a resonant circuit amplifier to continually produce a symmetric, stable output. In addition, a controller can dynamically modify a number of aspects of an output, e.g., an amplitude and/or a DC bias, by modifying the duty cycle of an input signal.

Enhanced resonant circuit amplifier

A computer system for dynamically switching modes within a magnetic sensor device communicates through a secondary communication channel with a first magnetic sensor device and a second magnetic sensor device. The first magnetic sensor device includes at least a magnetic signal receiving functionality. The computer system determines that the second magnetic sensor device includes magnetic signal transmitting functionality and magnetic signal receiving functionality. After determining that the second magnetic sensor device includes magnetic signal transmitting functionality, the computer system causes the second magnetic sensor device to begin transmitting a first magnetic field signal.
