The system includes an antenna assembly having a substrate, multiple pairs of transmit coils, multiple receive coils, multiple input terminals, and multiple output terminals. The substrate includes multiple layers, and each of the transmit coils is deposited on a respective one of the layers and each of the receive coils is deposited on another respective one of the layers. Each of the pairs of transmit coils corresponds to a respective one of the receive coils. Each of the transmit coils is coupled to a respective one of the input terminals, and each of the receive coils is coupled to a respective one of the output terminals.

A measured EM field strength is received from the EM sensor. A first gridpoint among a first set of gridpoints of the EM volume is identified based on the measured EM field strength and a high density (HD) map. The location and/or the orientation of the EM sensor is identified based on the HD map, using the first gridpoint as an initial condition, with the second set of gridpoints also including the first set of gridpoints.

The system may comprise an electronic control unit to analyze signals from the catheter and/or the introducer, to determine whether the catheter electrode is within the introducer; and to disregard data collected from the electrode when that electrode is in the introducer. The sensor may be on the catheter and the sensed element may be on the introducer. The sensed element may comprise one or several marker bands. A marker band may be applied during the manufacture of a medical device or during its use and is any element capable of electromagnetic detection.

An EM field strength at each gridpoint of a second set of gridpoints of the EM volume is calculated based on a geometric configuration of an antenna of the antenna assembly. An example method comprises generating a 3D model of a luminal network, identifying a target within the 3D model, determining locations of a plurality of carinas in the luminal network proximate the target, displaying guidance for navigating a location sensor within the luminal network, tracking the location of the location sensor, comparing the tracked locations of the location sensor and the portions of the 3D model representative of open space, displaying guidance for navigating the location sensor a predetermined distance into each lumen originating at the plurality of carinas proximate the target, tracking the location of the location sensor while the location sensor is navigated into each lumen, and updating the registration of the 3D model with the luminal network based on the tracked locations of the location sensor.

A method of detecting dislodgement of a navigational reference for a localization system includes securing a reference catheter, including at least one reference localization element, at an initial reference location within a localization field. The positions of one or more of the reference localization elements are monitored for a perceived displacement that suggests that the reference catheter has become dislodged from the initial reference location (e.g., a displacement above a certain threshold, such as about 4 mm). The direction of this perceived displacement may then be further analyzed (e.g., compared to a predicted or most likely direction of displacement) to determine whether there has been an actual dislodgement of the reference catheter, and, if so, an appropriate signal (e.g., an audible or visual warning) may be generated. Upon dislodgement, guidance may be provided to aid the practitioner in restoring the reference catheter to its initial location.

A method of operating a positioning system by registering a first coordinate system of a first positioning system in a second coordinate system of a second positioning system includes determining an interpolation function configured to register the first, non-orthonormal coordinate system in the second, orthonormal coordinate system. Fiducial pairs are collected by the respective positioning systems, each of which contain a respective coordinate in the respective coordinate system, both of which refer to the same physical point in three dimensional space. Establishing a working interpolation function involves an analysis of the fiducial pairs using a thin-plate spline algorithm. The method further includes repeatedly obtaining a first coordinate in the first coordinate system and determining a corresponding second coordinate in the second coordinate system in accordance with the interpolation function.
