The present disclosure provides a filter cartridge for a facepiece respirator mask body. The filter cartridge includes a cover, a base, and a filter medium. The cover has a top surface, a cover sidewall, cover support elements, and an inhalation vent. The cover support elements extend downwardly from the top surface. The inhalation vent is located at least primarily in the cover sidewall. The base has a bottom surface, a base sidewall, base support elements, and an inhalation port. The base support elements extend upwardly from the bottom surface. The inhalation port is located in the bottom surface. The base and the cover collectively define an interior compartment. The filter medium is sandwiched between the base support elements and the cover support elements in a manner that divides the interior compartment into an upper chamber and a lower chamber.

A plastic particle detector for detecting biological and other fluorescent materials is disclosed. The detector detects the fluorescence and scattering signals from these materials using deep UV excitation. The detector is fabricated using plastic materials and exploits the properties of lower manufacturing costs, lower materials costs, light weight, ruggedness and assembly ease offered by plastics, while eliminating stray fluorescence signals ordinarily generated by plastic materials.

A radiation source has a radiation-emitter assembly disposed, at least in part, in a first compartment of a housing. A lens system is disposed in a second compartment of the housing so that the lens system is optically coupled to the radiation-emitter assembly. A mirror is disposed in a third compartment of the housing so that the mirror is optically coupled to the lens system. A filter and a conduit are disposed in a fourth compartment of the housing so that the filter and an aperture provided by the conduit are optically coupled to the mirror. Radiation exits the radiation source through the aperture.

A sample heater assembly which permits the detection of low volatility agents by existing chemical agent detectors is described. Existing chemical agent detectors often lack the capability to accurately detect low volatility agents, such as the chemical warfare agent VX. The sample heater assembly provides this capability by heating low volatility agents to vaporization and interfacing with the existing chemical agent detector. The sample heater assembly comprises a sample containment reservoir for holding the low volatility agent sample, which can be attached to the chemical agent detector, and a heating element which attaches to the sample containment reservoir for heating the sample.
